Pese a que Inglaterra haya caído en el Mundial de Qatar, aquí la representación inglesa sigue vigente este lunes con uno de los artistas que más han acaparado los focos en los últimos años. Joel Corry se pasa por Wololo Sound para charlar acerca de este prolífico año en el que ha comandado los mejores festivales del mundo, disfrutándole nosotros específicamente en Italia. Además, nos cuenta acerca de su exitosa residencia en Ibiza sus primeras influencias musicales (muy vincualdas al estilo británico) y también de cómo se gestó su último hit ‘Lionheart’ junto a Tom Grennan. ¡Disfrutad de esta entrevista en exclusiva con el DJ y productor británico!
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Joel! Es un placer tener uno de los artistas más importantes del panorama mainstream en Wololo Sound. Has actuado en Tomorrowland, Ibiza, Europa, Norteamérica… La primera pregunta es casi obligada, ¿Cómo te encuentras personalmente y qué tal está yendo la última etapa del año?
Joel Corry: Estoy genial, ¡gracias! Es un placer hablar con vosotros, gracias por recibirme. Ha sido un gran año para mí, vengo de un gran verano como has dicho, tuve una residencia en Ibiza y estuve tocando en América casi todos los fines de semana. He viajado mucho, pero ha sido un verano increíble, con muchos grandes festivales incluyendo el escenario principal de Tomorrowland, Creamfields y EDC en Las Vegas. Son festivales en los que siempre quise tocar, así que este año lo he conseguido. Ahora mismo sigo de gira por América hasta que terminemos por Navidad.
Sinceramente, estoy deseando tener unas semanas libres en casa por Navidad porque llevo de gira desde febrero y han sido como once meses seguidos sin descanso, pero me encanta ir de gira por América. Para mí siempre ha sido un sueño y cuando voy a América es como una gran aventura porque son nuevos Estados, una nueva ciudad en la que nunca he estado antes. Es emocionante y me encanta estar allí.
Wololo Sound: Hi Joel! It is a pleasure to have one of the most important artists in the mainstream scene in Wololo Sound. You played this summer in Tomorrowland, Ibiza, Europe, North America… Our first question is almost mandatory, how are you and how is the last part of the year going?
Joel Corry: I’m great, thanks! It is great to talk with you so thanks for having me. It’s been a huge year for me, I’ve just come off the back of a big summer as you said, I had a residency in Ibiza and I was playing in America on most weekends. A lot of travelling but just an amazing summer, lots of big festival moments including the mainstage of Tomorrowland, Creamfields, EDC in Vegas… These are festivals I always wanted to play at so this year that’s happened for me. Right now I’m still touring in America until we finish for Christmas.
Honestly, I look forward to having a few weeks off back home for Christmas cause I’ve been on tour since February and it has been like eleven months of touring straight with no break, but I’m loving touring in America. For me, this was always a dream and when I go to America it’s like a big adventure every time cause it’s a new state, a new city that I’ve never been to before. It’s exciting and I’m loving it out there.
WS: ¿Ha sido duro ir de gira como has hecho este año, yendo y viniendo de América a Europa y tocando en los grandes escenarios?
JC: Antes de la pandemia giraba mucho, pero sobre todo en Europa, a veces pinchando incluso siete noches a la semana. Siempre he tenido residencias en destinos de fiesta como las islas griegas o España. Iba cada noche a una isla diferente o a un país diferente durante el verano. Ya tenía esa experiencia, así que estaba acostumbrado a ser un DJ de gira y a tener residencias, pero este año, obviamente, ha sido un nivel mucho mayor. Tocar en grandes festivales, en grandes escenarios, supone más presión, más cosas en las que pensar, pero siempre ha sido mi sueño.
Me gusta la presión, quiero llegar lo más alto posible, así que lo he disfrutado mucho y, obviamente, ir a Estados Unidos es una experiencia nueva para mí. Los largos vuelos de Inglaterra a Estados Unidos son difíciles porque el huso horario es diferente, así que tienes jet lag todo el tiempo y tu reloj biológico no se acostumbra. Así que he tenido que adaptarme y acostumbrarme a ir de un lado para otro con pantalones de dormir o intentando dormir en los vuelos. Está siendo increíble pero, por supuesto, viajar ha sido muy intenso y esa es la parte más difícil.
WS: Has been hard touring as you have done this year, going back and forth from America to Europe and playing on the big stages?
JC: Before the pandemic, I was touring a lot but just more in Europe, sometimes djing seven nights a week even. I’ve always had residencies in the party destinations like the Greek Islands or Spain. I was going every night to a different island or a different country during the summer. I already had that experience so I was already used to being a touring DJ and having residencies, but this year obviously it’s been a much bigger level. Being playing in big festivals, big mainstages so there’s more pressure, there’s more to think about but that was always my dream.
I like the pressure you know, I wanna go as high as I can do this so I’ve really enjoyed it and obviously going to America it’s being a new experience for me. The long flights from England to America are difficult because the time zone is different so you’re constantly kind of jet lag all the time and your body clock has no riddim. So I’ve had to adapt to get used to kind of being very all over the place with like, sleeping pants or trying to sleep just in the flights. It’s being amazing but of course, the travel has been very intense and that’s the most difficult part.
WS: Has crecido en Londres, sin lugar a duda una de las ciudades más ricas en cultura musical tanto electrónica como de otros géneros. ¿Cómo se fue desarrollando tu pasión por la música y quiénes han sido tus influencias para convertirte en el artista que eres hoy?
JC: Empecé a pinchar cuando tenía 13 años. Cuando era adolescente, el género musical más importante en aquella época en Londres era el garage. Cuando empecé pinchaba en tocadiscos con vinilos y solía ir a la tienda de discos todos los fines de semana a comprar música garage. Era una cultura diferente, una época diferente, pero era genial y estoy muy feliz de haber pasado por esos años porque la música significaba mucho en aquel entonces. Tenías que ir a la tienda a comprar música y quizá solo comprar un disco a la semana porque era caro. Ahora puedes descargarte lo que quieras gratis en Internet. Por aquel entonces era parte del proceso, ir a buscar música nueva a la tienda de discos, encontrar grandes discos y ponerlos en el set. Lo hice durante años en mi adolescencia como hobby y me encantaba. Así que mis primeras influencias fueron los DJ de garage, gente como DJ EZ o Todd Edwards, me encantaban.
Y entonces empecé a ir a Ibiza cuando tenía 17 o 18 años. Recuerdo que la primera vez que fui a Ibiza vi a Carl Cox pinchando en la discoteca Space y fue una experiencia alucinante. Estaba allí pensando: esto es lo que quiero hacer el resto de mi vida. Definitivamente creo que Ibiza me influyó, y mi amor por la música de baile y la música house se fue desarrollando durante mis veinte años. Y cuando empecé a centrarme en la producción musical, esa fue la línea musical que seguí. Además, por esa época, el EDM estaba muy de moda y cuando empecé a producir, hacía más música EDM y Melbourne Bounce, así que también pasé por esa etapa. Ha habido diferentes momentos a lo largo de los años que me han influido y finalmente he encontrado mi sonido, mi camino, y estoy feliz de publicar música con la que la gente conecta.
WS: You grew up in London, one of the richest cities in the world regarding musical culture, including electronic music and other genres. How was your passion for music developed and who has influenced you to become the artist you are nowadays?
JC: Well, I started djing when I was 13 years old. When I was a teenager the most significant genre of music at that time in London was garage music. When I first started djing was on turntables with vinyl and I used to go to the record shop every weekend to buy garage music. It was a different culture, a different era, but it was great and I’m so happy that I went through those years because music meant so much back then. You had to go to the shop to buy the music and maybe only buy one record a week cause it was expensive. Now you can download anything you want for free on the Internet. Back then you know it was part of it, was going to search for new music in the record shop, find great records and put them into the set. I did that for years during my teenage years as a hobby and I loved it. So my early influences were garage DJs, people like DJ EZ or Todd Edwards, I used to love them.
And then I started to go to Ibiza when I was like 17 – 18 years old. I remember the first time I went to Ibiza I saw Carl Cox djing at Space nightclub and it was a mindblowing experience. I was there thinking wow, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I definitely believe that Ibiza influenced me, and my love of dance music and house music were being developed during my twenties. And then obviously when I really started to focus on music production that was a sort of the line of the music that I went with. Also, during my early twenties, EDM was such a big thing and when I first started producing, I was making more EDM music and Melbourne Bounce, so I went through that stage as well. There have been such different times over the years that influenced me I finally kind of really found my sound, my lane and I’m just happy to be releasing music that people are connecting with.
WS: Uno de los grandes reclamos de Ibiza este verano ha sido tu residencia en Ibiza Rocks, todas las tardes de los miércoles. ¿Qué sensaciones has tenido durante el verano en tu residencia? ¿Cuál ha sido tu momento preferido?
JC: Ibiza es un lugar muy especial para mí, como he dicho, he estado yendo allí desde que era adolescente como raver. He ido a Ibiza todos los años durante los últimos 10 años y siempre he soñado con tener algún día una residencia allí, y este año ha sido así. La fiesta en Ibiza Rocks fue increíble, todas las semanas fueron muy buenas, muy concurridas y con muy buenas vibras. La residencia duró 17 semanas, era una residencia larga pero se mantuvo fuerte hasta el final. Por ejemplo, Becky Hill vino a interpretar “History”, que fue mi single durante el verano, fue increíble. También vino MNEK e interpretamos “Head & Heart”.
Pero creo que lo más destacado fue cuando vino mi madre, que era la primera vez que venía a Ibiza. Era la primera vez que mi madre se iba de vacaciones en muchos años debido a la pandemia y a que la gente no podía viajar. Y cuando vino a Ibiza, la saqué al escenario y el público se volvió loco. Creo que es un momento muy especial para mi madre y probablemente el mejor momento del verano para mí.
WS: Your residence in Ibiza Rocks, every Wednesday afternoon, has been one of the biggest attractions in Ibiza this summer. What have been your feelings during the summer regarding your residence? Which has been your favourite moment?
JC: Ibiza is a very special place to me, like I said I’ve been going there since I was a teenager as a raver. I went to Ibiza every single year for the last 10 years and I’ve always dreamed of one day having a residency there, and this year, that happened. The party at Ibiza Rocks was amazing, every single week was so good, so busy, such a good vibe. The whole residency was 17 weeks, it was a big residency but stayed strong all the way to the end. And there were so many big highlights, for example, Becky Hill came out to perform ‘History’ which was my single during the summer together, that was amazing. MNEK came out too and we did ‘Head & Heart’.
But I think the biggest highlight was my mum came out and it was the first time my mum has been to Ibiza. It was actually the first time my mum had a holiday in quite a few years because of the pandemic so people weren’t able to travel. And then she come to Ibiza, I brought her out on the stage as well and the crowd went crazy. I think this is like a really special moment for my mum and probably the biggest highlight of the summer for me.
WS: En una escapada que hicimos a Ibiza para ver el opening de Repopulate Mars en Eden Ibiza también te vimos por ahí, pero esta vez entre el público. Es popularmente conocido que una de las mejores formas para mejorar es ver a otros artistas en directo. ¿Es algo que suelas hacer a menudo? ¿Te gusta prestar atención a otros artistas para ver qué detalles puedes incorporar a tu estilo personal?
JC: Por supuesto, es muy importante ir a raves, ir a ver a DJs, ir a festivales… Escuchar lo que pinchan otros DJs y mantener los oídos bien abiertos. Ver a algunos de mis DJ favoritos y ver lo que pinchan en sus sets, sentirlo también en la pista de baile, es muy importante para mí. Una tarea que siempre haré y me aseguraré de hacer. Por muy ocupado que esté, sigo yendo a ver cómo pinchan otros DJ y creo que así mantengo la cabeza enfocada y me surgen ideas nuevas. Además, soy un fanático de la música, me encantan las raves, y los mejores recuerdos de mi vida los he pasado en raves, en fiestas con mis amigos viendo a mis DJ favoritos. Así que lo disfruto, me encanta hacerlo. Ya no lo hago tanto como antes, pero sigo asegurándome de hacerlo.
WS: On a trip we made to Ibiza to see the opening of Repopulate Mars at Eden Ibiza we also saw you around, but this time in the audience. It’s popularly known that one of the best ways to improve is to watch other artists live. Is this something you often do? Do you like to pay attention to other artists to see what details you can incorporate into your personal style?
JC: Of course, it’s really important going to raves, to go to see DJs, to go to festivals… Hear what other DJs are playing and keep my ears to the ground. To see some of my favourite DJs and see what they are playing on their sets, feeling that on the dancefloor as well, it’s very important to me. An assignment that I always will do and make sure that I do. Even how busy I am, I still go to see how other DJs perform and this way I think it keeps my head in the zone and keeps fresh ideas coming. Also, you know, I’m a fan of music, I love raving, and the best memories of my life are spent at raves, at parties with my friends seeing my favourite DJs. So, I enjoy it, I love doing it. I don’t do it as much as I used to, but I still make sure I do it.
WS: Tu currículum como productor es envidiable: ‘Sorry’, ‘Lonely’, ‘Head & Heart’, ‘BED’, ‘OUT OUT’ y muchos más. Pero recientemente, has lanzado ‘Lionheart’ con un artista de tanto talento como Tom Grennan, que ha trabajado con Calvin Harris. Incluso has interpretado la canción en directo con él en los premios Pride Of Britain. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de creación de “Lionheart”? ¿Esperabas un éxito tan grande?
JC: Fui fan de Tom durante muchos años, estaba arrasando con sus grandes éxitos y causando un gran impacto. Nos conocimos en un concierto y congeniamos al instante. Ahora somos muy buenos amigos y cuando le conocí fue muy fácil, me sentí como alguien a quien conocía desde hacía años, como uno de mis amigos del colegio. Así que fuimos juntos al estudio, fue muy natural y los dos queríamos hacer una canción tipo himno de big room. Es el tipo de canción que he querido hacer desde hace mucho tiempo y “Lionheart” cumple todos esos requisitos.
En cuanto empezamos a trabajar en ella y Tom puso las voces, todos en la sala supimos que estaba ocurriendo algo especial. Entramos en el estudio a finales del año pasado y he trabajado en este tema durante más de 9-10 meses con Tom para perfeccionarlo. Para mí, fue un paso en una nueva dirección, una evolución de mi producción para hacer ese tipo de himno de big room. Como ya hemos hablado, este año he estado tocando en muchos escenarios de todo el mundo, en muchos grandes festivales, y dentro de mí, quería tener esa canción para los mainstages.
Por fin estoy contento de haber sacado este tema, la respuesta es increíble hasta ahora, y creo que el momento en que lo lanzamos fue perfecto. Actuar en el Pride of Britain fue una gran experiencia, fue un honor. Y trabajar con Tom ha sido increíble, ha sido tan fácil y divertido. También tenemos grandes actuaciones programadas próximamente, así que estoy deseando actuar más juntos.
WS: Your resume as a producer is enviable: ‘Sorry’, ‘Lonely’, ‘Head & Heart’, ‘BED’, ‘OUT OUT’ and many others. But recently, you released ‘Lionheart’ with such a talented artist like Tom Grennan that has worked with Calvin Harris. Even you have performed the song on live with him at the Pride Of Britain awards. How was the process of creating ‘Lionheart’? Did you expect such great success?
JC: I was a fan of Tom for many years, he was killing the game having huge hits and making a massive impact. We met each other at a concert, and we clicked instantly. We are such good mates now and when I first met him it was so easy, it just felt like somebody I knew for years like one of my friends from school. So we went to the studio together, it was very natural and we both wanted to make a big room sort of anthem-style record. This is the sort of record I’ve wanted to make for a long time now and ‘Lionheart’ ticks those boxes.
As soon we started working on that and Tom lay down those vocals, everyone in the room knew something special was happening. We got in the studio at the end of last year and I’ve worked on this record for over 9-10 months with Tom to get it perfect. For me, it was a step in a new direction, an evolution of my production to make that sort of big room anthem. As we’ve discussed, this year I’ve been playing a lot of mainstages around the world in a lot of big festivals, and inside me, I just really wanted to have that record for the big room mainstages.
I’m finally excited that we got this record out, the response is amazing so far, and I feel that the time we launched the record was perfect. Performing at the Pride of Britain was a great experience, and I was honoured to be doing that. And working with Tom has been amazing, it has been so much fun, and so easy. We got so big performances lined up as well coming soon so I’m looking forward to performing it more together.
WS: Estamos terminando este año. ¿Cómo lo vais a afrontar? ¿Puede desvelarnos alguna sorpresa para finales de 2022 o principios de 2023?
JC: Estoy deseando tener una gran entrada de año. En primer lugar, voy a terminar mi gira por EE.UU., pero tuvimos grandes festivales como EDC Orlando, en el que tenía muchas ganas de tocar y también en Seismic Dance Event. Obviamente, “Lionheart” acaba de salir y va a ser genial verlo crecer en los próximos meses. También tengo un tema de club que acaba de salir esta semana, una nueva versión del banger de Cedric Gervais “Molly”, que salió hace unos 10 años.
He estado trabajando en él durante los dos últimos meses, probándolo en mis sets y por fin ha quedado perfecto, así que espero que lo disfrutéis. Es una canción más de club, como ‘Liquor Store’ o ‘The Parade’, y está teniendo un éxito absoluto en mis sesiones, así que estoy muy contento de lanzarlo. Además, en 2023 haré mi mayor gira por el Reino Unido en ciudades como Londres, Manchester o Glasgow entre muchas otras. Estoy muy emocionado y ¡espero veros allí!
WS: We are finishing this year. How are you going to face it? Can you reveal to us any surprise for the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023?
JC: I can’t wait to have a big entry of the year. First, I’m going to finish up my US tour but we got so big festivals like EDC Orlando which I was looking forward to playing and also in Seismic Dance Event. Obviously, ‘Lionheart’ just come out and it’s going to be great to watch it grow over the next couple of months. And also I got a club record that just came out this week, a new version of the Cedric Gervais banger ‘Molly’ that came out like 10 years ago.
I’ve been working on this for the last couple of months, testing it on my sets and finally got it perfect so I hope you guys enjoy it. This is more of a club record like ‘Liquor Store’ or ‘The Parade’ and it’s being absolutely off on my sets so I’m excited to release this one. Moreover, in 2023 I will do my biggest tour in the UK in cities like London, Manchester or Glasgow among many others. I’m so hyped about this and I hope to see you there!
