Wololo Sound entrevista a IMANU, uno de los artistas jóvenes más relevantes de la escena drum and bass en los últimos años
El drum and bass se encuentra en un genial estado de forma, y hay muchísimos factores a tener en cuenta. Uno de ellos es la enorme cantidad de productores jóvenes que están cambiando y haciendo evolucionar el sonido a base de experimentar y tomar influencias de otros géneros. Uno de los artistas más destacados en esto, si no el que más, es IMANU. Conocido anteriormente como Signal, este joven productor holandés empezó a ver como artistas de la talla de Noisia, Mefjus, The Upbeats o Black Sun Empire pinchaban sus producciones con apenas 18 años. Actualmente es una de las caras de Vision Recordings, el sello de Noisia, donde sacó su último y exitoso EP ‘Memento‘ en el que cuenta con influencias de pop, techno, distintos estilos del drum and bass y otros aspectos de la bass music. Con todos ustedes, IMANU.
Wololo Sound: Hola Jonathan y gracias por concedernos algo de tu tiempo para esta entrevista. Lo primero de todo, queremos hablar un poco sobre IMANU. ¿Cómo te sientes hasta ahora con el proyecto y cómo ha cambiado todo desde que dejaste de ser Signal?
IMANU: Estoy muy contento por cómo pinta hasta ahora. La gente parece entender por qué lo cambié y lo que viene con los cambios. ¡No me arrepiento para nada!
Wololo Sound: Hello Jonathan and thank you for giving us some of your time for this interview. First of all, we want to talk a little bit about IMANU. How do you feel so far about this project and how has everything changed since you stopped being Signal?
IMANU: I’m really happy with how it’s looking so far. People seem to understand why I changed it and what comes with the changes. I don’t regret it a bit!
WS: Eres de Holanda, un país que ha influenciado al drum and bass con un estilo diferente y artistas como Noisia o Black Sun Empire. ¿Cómo ves el aporte holandés en la escena drum and bass? ¿Qué otros artistas de tu país crees que merecen más reconocimiento?
IMANU: Creo que Holanda tiene una de las escenas más sanas para la promoción y la producción de drum and bass. Muchos artistas buenísimos con sonidos variados, y muchos estamos muy cerca. ¡Creo que la influencia de artistas como Noisia, Black Sun Empire o Icicle habla por sí sola! Personalmente creo que Posij, Former y Buunshin están muy infravalorados.
WS: You are from the Netherlands, a country that has influenced drum and bass with a different style and artists like Noisia o Black Sun Empire. How do you feel about the Dutch input into the drum and bass scene? What other artists from your country do you think that deserve more recognition?
IMANU: I think the Netherlands has one of the healthiest scenes for D&B production and promotion. Lots of sick artists with varied sounds, and a lot of us are pretty close. I think the influence of artists like Noisia, Black Sun Empire and Icicle speaks for itself! I personally think Posij, Former and Buunshin are really underrated.
WS: Hablemos de ‘Memento‘, tu último EP. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción? ¿Qué artistas, géneros o tipo de arte te han influenciado para esta preciosa obra maestra?
IMANU: Este EP toma inspiración de música con toques de pop como Flume y Sophie, también de artistas como Arca y Lapalux y de productores de techno como Randomer y Cadans. No he estado escuchando mucho drum and bass últimamente y creo (y espero) que eso se note en mis producciones.
WS: Let’s talk about ‘Memento’, your last EP. How was the producing process for this one? What artists, genres or pieces of art have influenced this beautiful masterpiece?
IMANU: This EP draws a lot of inspiration from some left-field pop-ish music like Flume and Sophie, and also artists such as Arca and Lapalux, and techno producers like Randomer and Cadans. I haven’t been listening to much D&B recently and I think (and hope) that shows in my productions.

WS: Desde tus primeros días, has tenido un buen sitio en Vision Recordings. ¿Cómo te han ayudado este sello y Noisia en tu carrera? ¿Cómo te sientes sobre su separación?
IMANU: Me encanta trabajar con Vision. Que mi equipo de management esté en la misma oficina hace que todo sea más llevadero. Siendo un auténtico fan de Noisia es un honor ser una de las principales caras del sello también. El proceso de Artist & Research es siempre encantador. Su separación fastidia, por supuesto, pero creo que todo irá bien y que oíremos cosas de ellos igualmente 🙂
WS: Since your very early days, you have had a good place in Vision Recordings. How has this label and Noisia helped you with your career? How do you feel about their split-up?
IMANU: I really like working with Vision. My management being in the same office really helps make everything smooth. Being a massive Noisia fan it’s an honour to be one of the main faces of the label as well. The A&R process is always lovely. Their split up of course sucks but I think everything will be fine, we’ll be hearing more from them all anyway 🙂
WS: ¿Cómo ves la escena drum and bass hoy en día? ¿Qué hay de toda la música que sale actualmente y esta generación de productores jóvenes de la que eres parte?
IMANU: No os voy a mentir, no soy muy fan de todo lo que hay en el drum and bass ahora mismo… Casi siempre suena todo el rato lo mismo para mí, y la gente intentando conseguir 15 minutos de fama haciendo un bootleg de un tema cualquiera de pop y convertirlo en una bocina o un roller de jump up me hace bostezar. Además, artistas creativos como The Caracal Project, Gyrofield y Buunshin no reciben el reconocimiento que deberían, en mi opinión. Creo que cambiará más rápidamente cuanto más metamos a la gente estas cosas guays en la cabeza 😀
WS: How do you see the drum and bass scene nowadays? What about all of the music coming out and this generation of young producers that you are part of?
IMANU: Not gonna lie, I’m not a massive fan of what’s going on in D&B right now… Just sounds like more of the same most of the time for me, and people trying to get their 15 minutes of fame by bootlegging some random pop song into a foghorn or jump up roller (yawn). Moreover, creative artists like The Caracal Project, Gyrofield and Buunshin aren’t getting nearly as much recognition as they should in my opinion. I think it’ll change faster the more we cram all this cool shit into people’s heads 😀
WS: ¿Qué estilo será la próxima moda dentro del drum and bass? ¿Qué hay de esta influencia del techno en la que artistas como Buunshin y tú habéis estado trabajando?
IMANU: Con suerte algo nuevo y musical, lol. No creo que lo del techno sea para todos, y creo que perdería su esencia si todo el mundo empezara a hacerlo.
WS: What will be the next trend to become popular within drum and bass? What about this techno influence that artists like you and Buunshin have been working on?
IMANU: Hopefully something new and musical, lol. Don’t think the techno stuff is for everyone, and I think it would lose a lot of its touch if everyone were to do it.
WS: ¿Qué artistas has descubierto hace poco y te gustaría recomendar? Drum and bass y también fuera del drum and bass.
IMANU: Para el drum and bass creo que todo el mundo debería empezar a escuchar a Buunshin,The Caracal Project, Posij y Gyrofield. Fuera del drum and bass todos deberían escuchar todo lo que Former, Baauer, Flume, SOPHIE y Arca están haciendo.
WS: What artists have you discovered recently and would like to recommend? Drum and bass and also non-drum and bass.
IMANU: For D&B I think everyone should start listening to Buunshin, The Caracal Project, Posij and Gyrofield. Outside of D&B everyone needs to listen to everything Former, Baauer, Flume, SOPHIE and Arca are making.
WS: Has estado en Andalucía (sur de España) en varias ocasiones, en Sevilla, Granada y en Málaga para Bass Invasion el pasado noviembre. ¿Cómo ves la escena aquí?
IMANU: ¡Me encanta pinchar en España! Muy a menudo a la gente parece encantarle los estilos más duros, pero mis sesiones parecen funcionar igualmente 😛
WS: You have been to Andalucia (Southern Spain) for a few times, in Sevilla, Granada and Malaga for Bass Invasion last November. How do you see the scene here?
IMANU: I love playing in Spain! Very often people seem to be liking the really hard stuff, but my sets seem to go down fine anyway :P
WS: ¿Algún lanzamiento que vaya a salir pronto? ¿Estás trabajando en algo como nuevos EPs y un álbum?
IMANU: Mi remix de ‘Jack’ con Buunshin salió la semana pasada y tengo un EP para más adelante este año.
WS: Any new releases coming soon? Are you working on something like new EPs or an album?
IMANU: My ‘Jack’ remix with Buunshin came out last week and I have an EP later this year.
WS: También nos gustaría saber cómo te ha afectado esta pandemia global, ya que sabemos que has empezado a hacer streaming en Twitch y has creado un canal de Patreon. ¿Cómo crees que evolucionará todo esto en los próximos meses?
IMANU: ¡Patreon ha sido muy bueno para mí! He trabajado mucho en sacarlo adelante y parece estar funcionando 🙂 Continuaré después de que el COVID “termine”, ya que lo he estado disfrutando muchísimo.
WS: We would also like to know how has this global pandemic affected you, as we know you started streaming on Twitch and created a Patreon channel. How do you think this will evolve within the next months?
IMANU: Patreon has been really good for me! I put a lot of work into it and it seems to work 🙂 I’ll be continuing after COVID is “over”, as I’ve really been enjoying it.
