Michael Woods es Offaiah. Nuestro nuevo entrevistado es un artista que pese a haber nacido y crecido en Londres, ha creado su fama principalmente en los últimos dos años establecido en Estados Unidos. Este productor ha realizado uno de los años más completos posibles en lo que al estudio se refiere con lanzamientos en Armada (SBJKT), Spinnin Deep, mau5trap y Defected, entre otros, y remezclas oficiales a artistas como Armin Van Buuren y Deadmau5. ¡Hemos podido charlar con Offaiah en esta entrevista que os presentamos hoy lunes!
WOLOLO SOUND – ¡Hola Offaiah! Lo primero de todo, gracias por darnos la oportunidad de charlar contigo. Antes que nada, nos gustaría que te presentaras a la audiencia española. ¿Quién es Offaiah y cómo te venderías a ti mismo como artista?
OFFAIAH – ¡Hola! Soy un DJ/productor que ha estado produciendo música electrónica desde hace 20 años. Siempre he estado metido en la música debido a que mi padre era profesor de piano, pero nunca creí que terminaría haciendo música para ganarme la vida. Un día estaba en casa del novio de mi hermana (quien tenía un estudio), y yo estaba trasteando con el piano mientras él estaba haciéndose un sándwich en la cocina y, de repente, vino corriendo y me preguntó que a ver qué estaba tocando. Dije que era algo que me acababa de inventar en ese mismo instante y finalmente, conseguimos transformarlo en una canción completa que fue mi primer lanzamiento, el cual llegó al top 40 en los charts de Reino Unido. Todo empezó ahí y, desde entonces, no he mirado atrás.
WOLOLO SOUND – Hello Offaiah! First of all, thank you for giving Wololo Sound the opportunity of talking to you. Before anything else, we would like that you introduce yourself to the Spanish audience. Who is Offaiah and how would you sell yourself as an artist?
OFFAIAH – Hi! I’m a DJ/producer and I’ve been producing dance music now for the last 20 years. I’ve always been into music as my father is piano teacher but I never thought I’d end up making music for a living.
One day I happened to be hanging out at my sister’s boyfriend’s house who has a studio, I was messing around on the piano while he was in the kitchen making a sandwich and all of a sudden he ran in asking what I was playing. I said it was something I had just made up on the spot and from there we managed to turn it in to a full song which ended up being my first release which went top 40 in the UK charts. It all started there and I haven’t looked back since.
WS – Con respecto a nuestro país, no te hemos visto apenas en nuestras fronteras. ¿Conoces España? ¿Conoces algún evento o artista que te llame especialmente la atención?
O – Conozco muy bien España, siendo de Reino Unido he estado allí de vacaciones muchas veces cuando era niño. También he tenido el placer de pinchar allí en varias ocasiones, sobretodo en Ibiza pero también en otros lugares como Barcelona, Alicante y Magaluf.
WS – Regarding to our country, we almost haven’t been able to enjoy your performances here. Do you know Spain? Do you have any event or artist who calls your attention?
O – I know Spain very well, being from the UK I’ve been there many times on vacation as a child. I’ve also had the pleasure of DJing there on many occasions, mostly in Ibiza but in other places such as Barcelona, Alicante and Magaluf.
WS – Recientemente te hemos visto en Ibiza, más concretamente en Ushuaïa. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia en el club, y qué opinas de la isla?
O – Ibiza es un lugar impresionante que está lleno de vida, color, música y cultura, y es uno de mis lugares favoritos de todo el mundo. Creo que he estado allí todos los años durante los últimos 20. Definitivamente, hay algo mágico en esa isla y fue un honor pinchar en el Ushuaïa, ¡y con el mismísimo Calvin Harris! Con toda mi honestidad, fue como un sueño hecho realidad eso de poder poner mi música en frente de un público de mas de 7.000 personas, la energía de ese sitio era totalmente distinta a la de cualquier otro lugar.
WS – Recently, you have been in Ibiza, at Ushuaïa. How was your experience at the club, and what do you think about the island?
O – Ibiza is a breathtaking place full of life, color, music and culture and is one of my favorite places on Earth – I think I’ve been there every year for the last 20 years in a row – there’s definitely something magical about the island and it was such an honor to play at the legendary Ushuaia, Ibiza and with none other than Calvin Harris! In all honesty it was like a dream come true being able to perform my music in front of a crowd of 7000+ people – the energy in that place was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.
WS – Queremos preguntarte un poco por tus influencias musicales. En esta última temporada cuadradas entre el house y el tech-house. ¿En qué momento crees que se ecnuentran estos géneros, y cuáles fueron tus ídolos en la materia?
O – Hay tantos productores de tantos géneros musicales a los que me gusta escuchar que es muy difícil responder concretamente a esta pregunta, pero me gusta escuchar a artistas de la talla de Latmun, Solardo, Chris Lake, Shiba San o Green Velvet. En cuanto a productores, me gustaría estar en el estudio con Solardo y Latmun – he sido un gran fan de sus sonidos desde hace ya unos años y me encanta el sonido “crudo” de sus producciones. Hablando de cantantes, me gustaría colaborar con Esperanza Spalding, que es una bajista y cantante de jazz estadounidense y desde que vi su actuación en la Casa Blanca, he sido un gran fan suyo.
WS – We would like to ask you about your musical influences; during this latest season, focused on house and tech-house. How would you describe the state-of-the art of this musical genres and which idols did you have in the field?
O – There’s so many producers of so many genres of electronic music that love to listen to that its hard to answer that question precisely but some electronic artists that I love to listen to include guys such as Latmun, Solardo, Chris Lake, Shiba San and Green Velvet. Producer-wise I’d love to get in the studio with Solardo and Latmun – I’ve been a big fan of those guys sound for some years now and love the raw sound of their productions. Singer-wise I’ve love to collaborate with Esperanza Spalding, who is an American Jazz bassist and singer, ever since I saw her performance at the White House I’ve been a massive fan.
WS – Defected y Armada (SBJKT) son sellos donde te vemos a menudo, y ambos se han visto claramente impulsados por esta nueva “moda” del tech-house. ¿Qué opinas de estos dos labels?
O – Son dos de los sellos más grandes y más respetados en la música house. Rara vez tienes un top 10 en Beatport sin al menos uno de estos sellos, sino varios temas en estos dos sellos. Cuando firmas un tema en estos sellos, trabajan contigo muy duramente para así poder exprimir al máximo el tema y además, también prestan mucha atención hasta al más mínimo detalle. Es un honor absoluto estar asociado a estos dos labels y tener su continuo apoyo mientras voy progresando a lo largo de mi carrera.
WS – Defected and Armada (SBJKT) are labels where you often release music, and both of them have been clearly influenced by this new tech-house “trend”. What can you tell us about these two labels?
O – These are two of the biggest and most respected record labels in house music. You rarely have a Beatport top 10 without at least 1, if not several records from these two labels. When you sign a record to these labels they really work hard with you to get the best out of the release and they pay close attention to the smallest of details. It’s an absolute honor to be associated with these two labels and to have their continued support as I progress through my career.
WS – Seguimos hablando de tech-house ya que mucha gente ha criticado su “boom” sobretodo porque ha hecho que varios artistas produzcan este género y este ciertamente sobre explotado. ¿Qué opinas?
O – Nadie puede criticar el progreso natural de la música, los gustos de la gente están continuamente cambiando y los géneros van ganando y perdiendo popularidad, es algo muy normal. Como productor, solo tienes que surfear esa ola y disfrutar de cada momento.
WS – Continuing with the talk about tech-house; many people have criticized its “boom” mostly because several artists have started producing this kind of music and it feels like it’s “overbooked”. What’s your opinion on this?
O – No one can criticize the natural progression of music – people’s tastes are always changing and different genres go in and out of popularity, this is very normal. As a producer you just have to ride that wave and enjoy every moment of it.
WS – Sin embargo, el gran éxito en cuanto a la producción te llegó con ‘Trouble’ en 2016. ¿Qué significó este tema para ti y tu carrera?
O – Nunca creí que cuando produje ‘Trouble’ iba a tener tanto éxito. Solo lo produje como un bootleg para tener música original que pinchar en mis sets. Después, empecé a ver las reacciones de la gente cuando lo escuchaban y mucha gente venía a preguntarme qué era, por lo que decidí regalar algunas copias antes de enterarme de que casi todos los DJs estaban pinchando este tema tanto en los clubes como en la radio. Fue una sensación increíble y pude poner mi nombre en el mapa, lo que me ayudó con mi carrera.
WS – However, your big producing success arrived with ‘Trouble’, in 2016. What did this track mean to you and to your career?
O – When I produced ‘Trouble’ I never thought it would be a huge as it ended up being – I just made it as a bootleg to have some original music to play out in my DJ sets. Then I started to see the reactions of people when they heard it and lots of people were coming up to me asking what it was, so I decided to give a few copies out and before I knew it almost every DJ was playing this song in clubs and on the radio. It was a great feeling and it definitely put my name on the map and helped me with my career.
WS – ¿Qué proyectos musicales tienes a corto/medio plazo?
O – Solamente estoy trabajando sin parar, siempre experimentando en el estudio, así que estoy deseando ver qué es lo siguiente que sale. Tengo planificados varios lanzamientos en mi propio sello ALL FIRE Records, además de varios lanzamientos con Defected para 2019 y 2020 y, actualmente, estoy trabajando en una colaboración con Ferreck Dawn. Atentos a todo esto.
WS – What are your musical projects in the short/medium run?
O – I’m just working away, forever experimenting in the studio so looking forward to seeing what comes out next. I have releases planned on my own label ALL FIRE Records, as well as more releases planned with Defected for 2019 and 2020 and I’m currently working on a collaboration with Ferreck Dawn – so look out for all of those.
