El talento femenino siempre ha estado presente en la industria musical, y la escena hardstyle nunca se ha quedado atrás. Nuestra entrevistada de hoy es la joven belga Mandy, quién lleva ya un tiempo afianzándose en el conocido sello Dirty Workz. A través del mismo ha lanzado ‘We Are Warriors’, un track muy personal sobre el que conoceréis más detalles abajo. Entrevista a Mandy / Interview with Mandy:
Wololo Sound: Hola Mandy. Lo primero de todo, ¡gracias por darnos la oportunidad de conocer un poco más de ti! Algo de ti que de verdad nos impresionó es lo joven que eres. ¿Cuándo y cómo empezaste tu carrera de DJ? Siguiendo esta pregunta, ¿cuándo decidiste centrar tu creatividad en el hardstyle y no en otros subgéneros?
Mandy: Empecé a pinchar a los 15 años. Al principio no era nada serio. Lo hacía solo por diversión. Comencé a practicar más y más e incluso se convirtió en mi primer trabajo remunerado. Conocí a más gente de la escena y firmé por el sello Dirty Workz. Crecí con temas a 150 BPM volviendo a casa y en el colegio, y mi sueño era convertirme en una DJ de hardstyle, así que mi elección fue rápida. ¡No me arrepiento en absoluto!
Wololo Sound: Hello Mandy. First of all, thank you for giving us the opportunity of knowing a little bit more about you! One thing that actually impressed us about you is how young you are! When and how did you start your DJ career? Following this question, why did you decide to focus your creativity on hardstyle and not on other subgenres?
Mandy: I started deejaying when I was 15 years old. In the beginning it wasn’t like very serious. I just did it for fun. I started practicing more and more and it even became my first paid job. I got to know more people in the scene and signed to Dirty Workz label. I grew up with 150bpm tracks back home and in school, and my dream was to be a Hardstyle DJ so my choice was made very fast tho. Never regretted it one day!
WS: Has sacado mucha música por Dirty Workz, donde se han lanzado algunos de los mejores temas de hardstyle de la historia. ¿Crees que los sellos ayudan a los artistas a crecer más? ¿Con qué sellos te gustaría colaborar en un futuro?
M: Creo que es importante tener un sello porque te ayudan en todo en cuanto a música. Tienen los contactos adecuados con todos los portales, lo saben todo sobre el tema legal relacionado con sacar música, Sabam… Un sello también tiene su propio alcance entre nuestro público objetivo, a quien por supuesto quieres llegar cuando lanzas música. Sería un gran honor sacar un tema por el sello de Martin Garrix, STMPD RCRDS. ¡Rezaré por ello!
WS: You’ve released a lot of music through Dirty Workz, where some of the best hardstyle tracks in history have been released. Do you believe that labels help the artist grow more? Which labels would you like to collaborate with in the future?
M: I do think It’s important to have a label because they help you in everything music wise. They have the right contact with all the portals, they know all about the legal stuff related to releasing music, Sabam… A label also has its own reach amongst our target audience, who you of course want to reach when releasing new music. It would be a great honor to once release a track at Martin Garrix’ label, STMPD RCRDS. Let’s hope & pray!
WS: Sabemos que acabas de sacar un tema nuevo que es muy especial para ti. ¿Qué puedes contarnos acerca de ello? ¿Qué mensaje quieres transmitir a quién lo escucha y quién crees que se sentiría más representado con él?
M: Esta hecho especialmente para mis fans porque ellos me levantaron en mis peores momentos. Ellos han sido los que siempre me han apoyado, sin importar lo que pasara. Y es gracias a ellos por lo que puedo hacer lo que me encanta. Me ayudaron a perseguir mi sueño.
Esperamos inspirar a todo el mundo a no rendirse y a perseguir sus sueños, ¡sin importar lo que sea! #WeAreWarriors. Como el tema es una colaboración entre Jelle van Dael y yo, creemos que un montón de mujeres se sentirán identificadas con el mensaje de este trabajo. Teniendo en cuenta que en este mundo algunas mujeres tienen que pelear un poco más duro que los hombres por lo que quieren…
WS: We know you just released a new track that is very personal for you. What can you tell us about it? What’s the message you want to give to anyone who listens to this track? Who you think that would feel more represented with it?
M: It’s made especially for my fans because they raised my up in my darkest hours. They are the ones who have always been supporting me, no matter what. And it’s because of them I can do what I love to do. They helped me to follow my dream.
We hope to inspire everyone to not give up and chase their dreams, no matter what! #WeAreWarriors. As the track is a collab between me & Jelle van Dael, we think a lot of women will feel related to the message of this track. Acknowledging that some women have to fight a little harder for what they want than men in this world…
WS: ¿Qué es lo que más os inspiró en la producción del tema?
M: Hay varias razones por las que decidimos juntarnos para este tema. Para empezar, la letra es autobiográfica. Tanto Jelle como yo hemos pasado por algunas dificultades para llegar a donde estamos hoy en día y seguimos recibiendo comentarios negativos en base a nuestro género. En segundo lugar, para agradecer a mis fans por supuesto. Y la voz de Jelle simplemente te produce escalofríos, ¿verdad?
WS: What inspired you the most in the production of this track?
M: There are several reasons why we chose to get together for this track. First of all, the lyrics are autobiographical – both Jelle and myself have experienced some struggles to get where we are today and still experience negative comments focused on our gender. Secondly, to thank my fans of course. And Jelle, her voice just give you goosebumps, doesn’t it?
WS: A pesar de ser tan joven, has construido una enorme carrera en la escena hardstyle con muchos temas exitosos como el remix a ‘Jackie Chan’ o ‘Raggadrop’. Pero ¿cuáles son los siguientes pasos que te gustaría dar como artista?
M: Mi tema ‘Raggadrop’ creó un pequeño ascenso en mi carrera. La canción sigue funcionando muy bien en los portales y supongo que la gente empezó a reconocerme. Y con el remix oficial a ‘Jackie Chan’ te das cuenta de que estas alcanzando un público totalmente diferente. Lo bueno es que esa otra gente llegó a conocerte y parece que les gusta lo que haces.
Tuve sets increíbles el año pasado, como por ejemplo el Gathering de Tomorrowland donde actué para 30.000 personas, Defqon.1, The Qontinent, World Club Dome (donde tuve que cubrir una baja de 15 minutos de un set en el mainstage, ¡fue una locura!). Tengo muchas ganas de tener más bolos y más grandes. Mi agenda para este verano está ya prácticamente completa: pincharé en Tomorrowland, Medusa Festival, Parookaville, World Club Dome, Defqon.1, Emporium, Intents, Animal Sound…
WS: Despite your short age, you’ve already built an amazing career in the hardstyle scene, with many successful releases such as your Jackie Chan remix or Raggadrop. But what are the next steps you’d like to take as an artist?
M: My track ‘Raggadrop’ created a certain step up in my career. The track is still doing very well on the portals and I guess people started noticing me. And with the official remix of ‘Jackie Chan’ you notice you are reaching a totally different crowd. The good thing is that those other people got to know you and seem to like what I do.
I have played great gigs the past year, with the Gathering at Tomorrowland, where I played for 30.000 people, Defqon.1, The Qontinent, World Club Dome – where I had to stand in for a set of 15 min on the mainstage; that was crazy! I can say I’m looking forward to do more and bigger gigs. My agenda for this summer is pretty full already: playing Tomorrowland, Medusa Festival, Parookaville, World Club Dome, Defqon.1, Emporium, Intents, Animal Sound,…
WS: Sabemos que has pinchado en ocasiones anteriores en Reverze. Pero, ¿qué sientes al pinchar por primera vez en el mainstage de uno de los festivales más grandes de tu propio país?
M: Cuando visité Reverze por primera vez en 2014, que lo recuerdo como si fuera ayer, soñé con pinchar algún día en él. El show y el público en Reverze están a otro nivel… quizá suene como un cliché, pero especialmente como una artista belga, el mainstage de Reverze es uno de los shows más grandes en los que puedes pinchar como artista de hard. Los últimos dos años he pinchado en el Lotto Arena y este año me ficharon para pinchar en el mainstage, ¡simplemente una locura! Tengo que admitir que estaba un poco nerviosa por actuar en el mainstage por primera vez y también porque estrenamos mi nuevo tema con Jelle van Dael, ‘We Are Warriors’. Pero madre mía, ¡menuda sensación!
WS: We know that you’ve played in Reverze before. But, what are your feelings about playing for the first time in the Mainstage of one of the biggest festivals in your own country?
M: When I visited Reverze for the first time in 2014, I remember like the day of yesterday, I dreamed to play here one day. The show and audience at Reverze are that extra level…. Maybe it sounds cliché, but especially as a Belgian artist, Reverze Mainstage is one of the biggest shows you can play as a hard dance artist. The last 2 years I played at the Lotto Arena & this year I was listed to play at Reverze Mainstage… Just insane! I have to say I was a bit nervous to play at Mainstage for the first time, also because we premiered my new track with Jelle van Dael, “We Are Warriors”. But Oh My God, what a vibe it was!!

WS: Hablando de tu música, y dejando a un lado tu próximo tema, ¿tienes alguna otra gran cosa preparada para tus fans?
M: Siempre estoy trabajando en cosas nuevas. Saldrá más música antes de verano, eso puedo prometerlo.
WS: Talking about your music, and forgetting about your upcoming track, do you have some other big things prepared for your fans?
M: Always working on new stuff. More music to be released before summer, that I can promise.
WS: La industria de la música electrónica ha estado experimentando un aumento del talento femenino en los últimos años. No solo en la escena hard, sino que también en otros muchos subgéneros. ¿A qué artistas femeninas admiras más? ¿Crees que es más complicado que te tomen en serio cuando eres mujer?
M: Charlotte De Witte, ¡es simplemente maravillosa! Sus actuaciones son muy buenas y se mantiene firme.
Por supuesto, porque mucha gente piensa que es un mundo de hombres y que las mujeres no saben pinchar. Recibes un montón de comentarios negativos basados en el género. Así es como es. Y las redes sociales son la manera más fácil que tiene la gente de compartir sus pensamientos. Pero yo simplemente hago lo que me gusta y eso para mí significa dar el 100% de mi energía tras la cabina para asegurarme de que el público se vuelva loco.
WS: The electronic music industry has been experiencing a major growth on female talent during the last few years. Not only in the hard scene, but in many other subgenres. What female artists do you admire the most? Do you believe it’s harder to be taken seriously when you’re a woman?
M: Charlotte De Witte, she’s just amazing! Her performances are really good & she stands her ground.
For sure, because a lot of people do think it’s a men’s world and women don’t know how to dj. You do get a lot of negative comments based on gender. That’s just how it is. And social media is the easiest way for people to share their thoughts. But I just do what I like & that’s for me giving 100% full energy behind the DJ booth to make sure to crowd goes crazy.
WS: La música hard está pasando por algunos cambios últimamente, sobre todo con la llegada de algunos artistas que parecen estar cambiando el estilo tradicional al que estamos acostumbrados. ¿Cómo crees que la escena hard cambiará en los próximos años?
M: Los productores de hard están probando cosas diferentes porque parece que la gente espera cosas nuevas. A veces tienes que sacar algo original para destacar. Así que es por eso por lo que hay un montón de sonidos diferentes. Creo que cambiará aún más en los próximos años. También parece que el hardstyle se está volviendo más popular con la mezcla de estilos entre el público y creo que esto hará crecer al género.
WS: Hard music is experiencing some changes lately, mostly with the arrival of some artists that seem to be turning the traditional style we’re used to into something else. What way do you think hard scene will change during the next years?
M: Hard dance producers are trying different things because you might experience people are expecting new things. Sometimes you need to come with something original to stand out. So that’s why there are a lot of different sounds in it. I think it will change even more the next few years. It also seems that hardstyle music is getting more popular with the crossover crowd and I believe that this will grow the popularity of the music genre.
WS: Has visitado nuestro país, España, unas cuantas veces ya que has pinchado en algunos de nuestros festivales. ¿Sigues a algún artista español? ¿Qué sentimiento te trasmite nuestro público?
M: ¡Cada vez que vengo a España es una locura lo emocionados que están mis fans! Me siento muy querida y bienvenida en vuestro país. Puedes decir que de verdad hay un público entregado, que siempre se vuelve loco y lo da todo de fiesta. Sigo a Adrian Fyrla, un DJ de España y también a Rosalía aunque no sea DJ.
WS: You’ve visited our country, Spain, a few times as you’ve played in some of our festivals. Are you following any Spanish artists? What vibes did you get from our crowds?
M: Every time I come to Spain, it’s really crazy how my fans are so hyped! I feel so loved & welcome in your country. You can really tell there is a dedicated crowd, who always go crazy & party hard. I follow Adrian Fyrla a DJ from Spain and Rosalia but she’s not a DJ.
