Desde los 14 años y desde la ciudad gallega de Viveiro (Lugo), el artista Karras Martínez lleva toda su vida dedicada a la música electrónica. Varias etapas han marcado la carrera del español, y todas ellas las repasamos en esta entrevista que Karras nos ha concedido hace unos días.
Antes de todo, muchas gracias por atender a nuestro medio, Wololo Sound. Empezaste en el mundo de la música a los 14 años, ¿qué es lo que te llamó la atención de todo este mundo? ¿Cómo fueron los comienzos? ¿Algún claro referente por el que te guiaras?
De alguna forma la música siempre ha estado muy presente en mi vida desde que era pequeño. Mi padre fue dj a mediados de los 80, mi hermano mayor siempre ha tenido música por casa a la que le prestaba mucha atención y otra parte de mi familia también se dedica a la música. De ahí empezó a florecer todo. Mis inicios estuvieron claramente influenciados por artistas como Depeche Mode o Cristian Varela.
First of all, thank you very much for talking with our media, Wololo Sound. You started in the music world when you were 14 years old, what was the thing that caught your attention about this world? How were your beginnings? Any idols that you looked up to?
In some way music has always been very present in my life since I was a kid. My father was a DJ around the 80s, my big brother has always had music at home that I used to pay attention to and I have other relatives that make a living
Tus sets son un “popurrí” de estilos, house, techno, sonidos frescos y minimalistas, ¿cómo has llegado a estos sonidos, y como se prepara un set tan dinámico?
La experiencia que te da tener una residencia durante años te ayuda a desarrollar sets largos, elaborar warm-ups, abrir y cerrar; y eso hace que cuando vas a un club o a un festival intentes dar lo mejor. Me gusta adaptarme al lugar donde tengo que trabajar, estudiar el espacio. Es cierto que me siento muy influenciado por el techno, pero eso no quita que en mis sesiones busque variedad, una fusión de estilos dentro de mi gusto musical, más allá de las tendencias del momento. Hay muy buena música como para centrarse solamente en un género, y creo que es necesario tener un punto de dinamismo.
Your sets are a mix of genres, House, Techno, fresh and minimalistic sounds. How did you get to these sounds and how do you prepare
The experience that being resident during a lot of years gives you helps at developing long sets, prepare warmups, open and close; and that makes you give your best when you go to a club or festival. I like to adapt myself to the place I have to work in, study the environment. It is true that I am very influenced by Techno, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t look for variety in my sets, a mix of genres among my musical tastes, far away from the trends of the moment. There is too much good music to just focus on one genre, and I think it is necessary to have a little bit of dynamism.
Hace poco has estrenado Perspective, tu primer EP en donde das tu visión del techno. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción? ¿Estás contento con este lanzamiento y el feedback del público?
“Perspective” es un EP de techno muy personal donde la inspiración de la naturaleza está muy presente. Con tirada en vinilo y un diseño gráfico muy cuidado a cargo de la diseñadora Plástica, los elementos que componen el EP forman un conjunto especial para mí. El proceso fue muy bonito, lleno de aprendizaje, realmente he puesto mucho amor en lo que hice. Además, me hizo ilusión poder lanzarlo en vinilo a través de Bóreos Records, un nuevo label con un proyecto muy interesante.
You recently premiered ‘Perspective’, your first EP in which you give us you vision of Techno. How was the creative process? Are you satisfied with the release and the feedback from the people?
‘Perspective’ is a very personal Techno EP in which inspiration from nature is very present. With a vinyl release and a very curated image from the designer Plástica, the elements that build the EP form a very special compilation. The process was really beautiful, full of learning, I really brought a lot of love into what I did. Furthermore, I was so happy to release it on vinyl on Bóreos Records, a new label with a very interesting projection.
Ya que has estrenado tu primer EP suponemos que tendrás algo más bajo la manga, ¿algo en lo que estés trabajando ahora y que nos puedas adelantar? ¿Proyectos para este 2019?
Principalmente tengo varios EPs cerrados, uno con Bóreos Records y otro más del que todavía no puedo adelantar detalles. Además, estoy trabajando con un equipo muy profesional el apartado de management para tocar durante este año en ciudades donde no he actuado anteriormente. Programaremos unas cuantas noches “all night long”, un formato en el que me siento muy cómodo y que me ha funcionado muy bien los últimos años.
Now that you have already premiered your first EP we suposse you’ll have something up your sleeve, are you working on something now that you can tell us in exclusive? Any projects for 2019?
I have three EPs finished, one with Bóreos Records and another one of which I can’t talk about. I am also working with a very professional management team so I can play in cities I haven’t played yet during this year. We will schedule some “All night long” club nights, a format that makes me feel very comfortable and that has worked pretty well for me during the past years
¿Cómo te ves de aquí a cinco años? ¿Y como ves la música underground dentro de ese tiempo? Algunos dicen que cada vez es más mainstream…
Con lo rápido que va todo es muy difícil imaginar cómo estaremos en 5 años, ahora mismo quiero disfrutar del presente y trabajar con la misma ilusión, confianza y ganas que las del primer día, rodeado de gente que me aporta mucho y de la que aprendo continuamente. La música underground a nivel general la veo mejor que nunca gracias a la difusión en internet y a la proliferación de microescenas en toda Europa. También es cierto que se produce muchísima música a día de hoy y hay que filtrar más que hace una década. Pero con respecto a eso ya entra en juego cómo encuentra y escucha música cada uno.
How do you see yourself in five years? How do you think underground music will be at that time? Some people say it’s getting more mainstream…
Everything is going really fast, so it’s quite hard to imagine how we will be in five years, right now I want to enjoy the present and work with the same illusion, confidence and passion as in the first day, surrounded by people that provides me with new things to learn from. Underground music in better than ever thanks to the Internet and all the microscenes in all Europe. It is also true that a lot of music is produced nowadays and you have to filter more than a decade ago. But regarding to that comes how everyone finds and listens to music.
También eres promotor, ¿cómo empezaste en esto?
Surgió de forma natural. Quería pinchar para público cuando tenía 15 años y monté un evento para el programa de fiestas de Viveiro en el que invité a otros Djs, y gracias a eso me salió mi primera residencia en el Txiri Clubbing. A los 18 años me surgió la oportunidad de montar mi propio club, el Soho Clubbing, y de ahí hasta el día de hoy.
You are also promoter, how did you start in this?
It came out in a very natural way. I wanted to DJ for an audience when I was 15 and I organised an event for the festivity programming of Viveiro in which I invited other DJs, and thanks to this my first residence came out in Txiri Clubbing. When I was 18 I has the opportunity to create my own club, Soho Clubbing, and from there on to today.
An Electronic Odyssey, el festival que llevas con tu promotora, ha causado una gran sensación en Viveiro. ¿Qué se siente al llevar un festival al lugar donde empezaste?
Siento mucha ilusión. Viveiro, a pesar de ser una localidad pequeña, siempre ha tenido mucha tradición y cultura musical, y esto te motiva a llevar a cabo un proyecto rodeado de tus amigos y vecinos, abriendo el pueblo a la música electrónica. Además, es un privilegio recibir el apoyo todo el mundo que te rodea en Viveiro para traer artistas a los que admiras.
An Electronic Odyssey, the festival you are in charge of, has been a great sensation in Viveiro. What do you feel with being in charge of a festival in the place where you started?
I am very excited. Viveiro, despite of being a small town, has always had a very strong musical tradition and this motivates you to develop a project surrounded by your friends and neighbours, offering the town electronic music. It is also a privilege to receive support from everyone living in Viveiro to bring the artists you admire.
Tras las ediciones de 2015, 2016 y 2018, ¿qué nos deparará An Electronic Odyssey?
Principalmente seguiremos ofreciendo al público música electrónica de vanguardia, vamos creciendo poco a poco. Este año la fecha se celebrará el sábado 27 de julio. Además, estamos preparando nuevos eventos para expandir la marca y llevarla a más lugares.
After 2015, 2016 and 2018, what has An Electronic Odyssey in store for us?
We will mainly keep on offering the audience cutting edge electronic music, we are growing step by step. This year it will be on Saturday 27th July. We are also preparing some new events to expand the brand and take it to new places.
Hablando de Galicia, tras estos últimos años de progreso, ¿cómo ves la escena gallega?
Bajo mi punto de vista, a nivel de djs/productores está mejor que nunca; hay bastante gente lanzando buenos trabajos y editando en grandes labels. Siempre puede haber nostálgicos que dirán que lo de antes era mejor, pero estoy seguro que dentro de 10 años hablaremos de todo lo que está sucediendo hoy en día. ¡Estamos viviendo un gran momento! Quizás hubo un bajón a nivel general hace unos cuantos años en Galicia, ya que muchos clubs de las localidades más pequeñas dejaron de programar. No obstante, ahora mismo se están gestando proyectos interesantes por toda la geografía gallega, algunos más consolidados que otros, pero que pueden ser la semilla de algo más grande que está por venir.
Speaking of Galicia, after these years of progress, how do you see the Galician scene?
In my opinion, we have the best DJs and producers ever right now, there is quite some people launching good releases and editing in great labels. There can always be nostalgic people that will say that earlier music was better, but I’m sure that in ten years we will be talking about what’s happening today. We are living a great moment! There might was a little comedown some years ago in Galicia, after some little clubs from the smaller towns stopped programming. However, right now we are taking some very interesting projects through all the Galician territory, some more established than others, but that can be the seed to something bigger that is coming soon.
