Desde su Glasgow natal, Gary Beck ha logrado abrirse un hueco dentro de la industria underground. El DJ y productor escocés lleva más una década dentro de los artistas más importantes de su género y ha conseguido publicar sus trabajos en grandes sellos como Drumcode, Cocoon o Saved. Además es propietario de BEK Audio, un sello muy prestigioso que hoy 10 mayo lanza a la venta el vinilo de su nuevo EP llamado ‘Pneuma’. Wololo Sound: Me gustaría empezar la entrevista preguntándote por tus comienzos en Glasgow. ¿Crees que es más fácil crecer como artista en un lugar con buena escena musical o crees que solo importa el talento musical?
Gary Beck: Creo que no es necesario aunque si que ayuda. Glasgow es una ciudad rica en talento musical y discotecas excelentes. Tuve suerte de tener a los mejores DJs del mundo prácticamente en la puerta de casa entonces eso para mi fue una buena educación musical. Una semana podía estar escuchando a Jeff Mills y la otra a Laurent Garnier. Además, tener a Soma Records lanzando música tan buena durante esos años fue también muy inspiracional para la escena de Glasgow. También hicieron un montón de eventos geniales.
Wololo Sound: I would like to start asking you about your beginnings in Glasgow. Do you think it’s easier to grown up as an artist in a place with a good music scene or that it’s important for musical talent?
Gary Beck: I think it’s not a necessity, however it does help. Glasgow is a city rich in great musical talent along with excellent clubs. I was lucky to have the best DJ’s in the world practically on my doorstep, so I found this to be a really good education. One week, I would be listening to Jeff Mills and the other Laurent Garnier. Having Soma records releasing such great music over the years was also very inspirational for the Glasgow scene. They also put on so many amazing events.
Wololo Sound: Una de tus primeras producciones fue lanzada por Atypical Farm, un sello de Coyu, uno de nuestros DJs más importantes hoy en día. ¿Qué DJ españoles sigues o pinchas su música actualmente?
Gary Beck: ¡Si, lo recuerdo! Coyu es un gran chico y fue genial trabajar con él. Disfruto mucho de los lanzamientos de Suara y también con lo que Oscar Mulero está haciendo en Pole Group. ¡España tiene un montón de artistas con talento!
Wololo Sound: One of your first productions was released by Atypical Farm, a label owned by Coyu, one of Spain’s biggest DJs nowadays. Which Spanish DJs do you follow /play their music at the moment?
Gary Beck: Yes, I remember that! Coyu is a great guy and it was lovely working with him back then. I enjoy some of the output on Suara. I also enjoy what Oscar Mulero is doing at Pole group. Spain has many talented artists!

Wololo Sound: Tus lanzamientos en Soma, Drumcode y We Are The Brave fueron muy importantes. ¿Qué significaron esos proyectos para ti? ¿Habrá más lanzamientos por otros sellos o actualmente estás centrado en BEK Audio?
Gary Beck: Mi preocupación actual es BEK Audio. Está genial lanzar música en los sellos que has mencionado pero, con BEK Audio, tengo un lugar donde puedo hacer lo que yo quiera. Aún así no descarto lanzar algún EP ocasional por otro sello. BEK Audio es también el sello por donde lanzaré mi segundo álbum que esta de camido.
Wololo Sound: Your releases on Soma, Drumcode and We Are The Brave were all big. What have each of these projects meant to you, and will there be any more releases on these labels in the future or is your main focus BEK Audio?
Gary Beck: The main focus right now is BEK Audio. It’s been nice to release on the labels you mention, although with BEK, I have a platform that I can do what I want. I’m not ruling out doing the occasional EP elsewhere though! BEK Audio is also the platform which I’ll use to release my second album, which is well under way!
Wololo Sound: BEK Audio ha publicado lanzamientos de otros artistas como Slam, Ben Sims o Speedy J. ¿Crees que es importante para un productor tener su propio sello para seguir creciendo como artista o un sello está más enfocado en apoyar la música que te gusta?
Gary Beck: Creo que es algo que todo artista debería mirar de hacer. A veces puede ser realmente frustrante mandar demos sin obtener respuesta, especialmente con la cantidad de demos digitales que se manda. Diría que sí, creo que es una buena manera de tener tu propio sello para tu música. Si la música es lo suficientemente buena, tendrá visibilidad.
Wololo Sound: Your label BEK Audio has some standout releases from artists including Slam, Ben Sims and Speedy J. Do you think it’s important for an artist have his/her own label to grow /develop their career or whether it’s more about supporting music that you like?
Gary Beck: I think it’s something every artist should look at doing. Sometimes it can be really frustrating sending away demos with no response, especially with the endless Digital demos and promos being sent. So yes, I think it’s a good thing to have a platform for your own music. If the music is good enough, it will gain exposure.

Wololo Sound: Hablando de BEK Audio, hoy lanzas tu nuevo EP ‘Pneuma’ en vinilo. Cuéntanos un poco más sobre este EP de techno en el que parece que vuelves a tus inicios en términos de ese sonido industrial.
Gary Beck: Si, estoy volviendo a ese sonido mecánico. Aún así, no me gusta limitarme al sonido de lo que voy a lanzar. Si algo algo más “funky”, lo publicaré aunque en esta ocasión me sentí un poco más oscuro.
Wololo Sound: Talking of BEK Audio, today, you release our new EP ‘Pneuma’ on vinyl. Tell us a little more about this one, it’s a strong techno release, and seems to be back to your roots in terms of that linear warehouse sound.
Gary Beck: Yes, this is going back to the ‘head down’ mechanical vibe! I never like to limit myself on what sound I’m going to release. If I make something funky, then so be it. On this occasion I was feeling pretty dark.

Wololo Sound: Hemos visto que has lanzado el vinilo primero y luego lanzarás el EP de forma digital. Viendo como crecen las ventas de los vinilos en los últimos años a pesar de que producirlos cuesta más, ¿Crees que es beneficioso para los productores lanzar temas en vinilo o prefieres publicarlo en plataformas digitales como la mayoría de artistas jóvenes?
Gary Beck: Me encantan los vinilos y publico mis temas en vinilo siempre que puedo. Los costes son bastante altos así que es muy duro correr el riesgo. Lanzaré un par de EP únicamente en formato digital por este mismo motivo. Al poder lanzarlos también de manera digital significa que puedo lanzar más música que un par de lanzamientos por año. Como un artista joven, me encanta ver mi música en formato físico. Recuerdo cuando cogí en mis mano mi primer vinilo, fue un gran momento. Ahora solo encuentro lanzamientos digitales desafortunadamente, entonces todos los artistas deberían mirar de probar la experiencia del vinilo.
Wololo Sound: We see you released on vinyl first and then digital for this release. Vinyl sales are increasing in the last few years, although the cost of production is high – do you think its positive for producers to release on vinyl? Or do a lot of younger artists prefer digital sales on a platform like Beatport?
Gary Beck: I love vinyl and I’ll always release it as much as I can. The costs involved are really going up now though so it’s very hard to take risks. I’ll be releasing a few digital only EP’s from now on because of this situation. It also means I can put more music out whereas before I would be doing 2 releases a year. As a young artist, it’s very encouraging to see your music on plastic. I remember the feeling of holding my first vinyl! It was a great moment. I just find digital only releases so disposable unfortunately, so every artist should look to get some vinyl action.
Wololo Sound: Te hemos escuchado anunciar tu primer álbum 5 años después del anterior. ¿Nos podrías decir cuando estará más o menos a la venta y contarnos un poco de información sobre él?
Gary Beck: !Sí, está de camino y va a ser genial! Estará terminado sobre junio y espero poder lanzarlo a finales de octubre si no hay problemas con la imprenta. Tiene algunos temas importantes aunque definitivamente habrá sorpresas en él.
Wololo Sound: We hear you have recently announced your first album in 5 years for 2018. Can you tell us when you think this will be coming out, and a little more without letting out too much info?
Gary Beck: Yes, it’s well under way and its going great! It will be finished by June and we hope to have it out late October, providing there’s no delays with the pressing. It’s got some bangers on there although there will definitely be a few surprises.

Wololo Sound: Has visitado España varias veces en los últimos meses con shows en Barcelona, A Coruña, Pontevedra… ¿Qué piensas de la gente española y de la escena que tenemos? ¿Tienes algún lugar favorito para pinchar aquí?
Gary Beck: ¡Me encanta España! Desearía pinchar más frecuentemente aquí porque mis experiencias siempre fueron muy positivas. Tengo muy buenos recuerdos del sur, en Granada. Siempre disfruto mucho cuando voy a Barcelona pero Fabrik en Madrid es siempre excepcional.
Wololo Sound: You visited Spain a few times in the last months with shows at Barcelona, A Coruña or Pontevedra… What do you think of Spanish people and their music scene? Have you a favourite venue to play here?
Gary Beck: I love Spain! I wish I could play more often as my experiences have always been very positive. I had some really nice experiences in the far south in Granada. I always enjoy Barcelona too, but Fabrik Madrid is always exceptional.
