Entrevista con Adaro / Interview with Adaro

WOLOLO SOUND – ¡Hola Thijs!

WOLOLO SOUND – Hello Thijs! Thank you for giving us the chance of interviewing you and getting to know you a little bit better. To get started, we would like you to talk about one of your best known tracks, ‘Touch A Star’ featuring B-Front. This song made it into the #4 position in the Top 100 Hardstyle by Q-Dance last year. What can you tell us about this ranking? Do you think of it as a popularity ranking or is it a fair ranking for you?

ADARO – First of all ranking lists are mostly about popularity, it doesn’t have anything to do with quality or craftsmanship. And it’s also a matter of taste of course. But from all the ranking lists I take this one seriously because it’s about the music and not about marketing of an artist or presentation. People vote for their favorite song, so I think it’s a fair ranking about the most popular hardstyle tracks of the year. Not the best tracks of the year but the most popular of the year. I’m very thankful and happy that the crowd voted Touch a Star as number 4.

WS – Talking about other famous rankings… What do you think about what Headhunterz recently said about the DJ Mag Top 100? Do you also believe that hardstyle is underrated on this list?

A – I don’t believe that hardstyle is underrated in the DJ Mag list. We are a small genre compared to the mainstream EDM and dance that you hear on the radio and mainstages. So I think that it’s quite special that some hardstyle names are doing great in the list. You can see how dedicated the hardstyle and hardcore scene is compared to mainstream genres. We are way smaller in numbers and are still in this list.

About the statement Headhunterz did, I can respect that, although I think he is a great ambassador of hardstyle worldwide. He has that mysterious X-Factor that people like to see and follow. I agree with him that some other names definitely deserved to be also in that list. But that also has to do with that it’s a popularity list. A trend you see that social media presence is more important than the music you deliver. A development that I don’t like as a pure music lover but that’s how it works these days. There’s nothing you can do about that.

WS – You’re about to release the remix for ‘Calling’ by SEFA, and as far as we know you are very proud of the result. What can we expect from this remix?

A – I really loved the track ‘Calling‘ by SEFA and saw some creative challenges in remixing it. So I asked him and he gave his okay. I’m super happy with the result and so is SEFA. It can not be officialy released due to some reasons, so somewhere in the future I will probably give it away on my media. This remix is really the hardstyle I stand for nowadays, nice melodies with hard pounding beats, and it gets support from a lot of the big names.

WS – Will SEFA mark the beginning of a new era in hard music?

A – The success of SEFA really gave the hardcore scene a new gigantic boost that was really needed. What I really like about it, is that it’s full of melody. And he really does something unique with his piano playing on stage, he is a one of a kind artist. I can enjoy that. Hopefully this will also make the mainstream hardcore scene bigger again, that hardcore people will go for more melody again. Cause the success of Uptempo hardcore really overshadowed the mainstream hardcore and that’s the hardcore that I personally like the most. Also my personal favorite producers are active in the mainstream hardcore scene.

WS – Apart from your solo musical career, you are half of the duo Gunz for Hire with Ran-D. Is it more inspirational to work with someone or just by yourself? What are your future projects with him?

A – Gunz For Hire is a nonstop project studio wise, we are always busy with new ideas and tracks. We can read and write blindly with each other in the studio. We had a very productive year as Gunz For Hire, our liveset is music wise almost completely renewed this year and will go on like this, so you can also definitely expect a lot of new tracks from us in 2020.

About collabs in general, I really like that. I’m a real teamplayer and love working with other people. You can always learn from other people’s working ways and you make different things than working alone. But my rule is that I only do collabs with guys that I also have a click with personally, not just for business reasons or more ‘likes’.

WS – We haven’t seen many hairstyle artists collaborate with artists from other genres, would you be open to do that?

A – It depends on the click I have with that artist, and if it their style is suited to make a hardstyle track with in the style that I like.

WS – The hardstyle scene is nowadays spreading really fast worldwide. Do you think this will affect its essence?

A – What is the essence of hardstyle? The real essence that you saw in the early days, the ‘underground’ feel is already gone a long time ago. Underground is also commercial in these days of social media and massive events. Now I think that the essence has shifted to that hardstyle is the hard side of the mainstream dance music and this is also gives the ‘rebel’ and ‘outcast’ feeling that we have to embrace. Besides the the power of our music this is also what people around the world like about our scene and I don’t think the worldwide success of hardstyle affects this. In every country I visit I still see the same real love for the music, sometimes the people of other countries are even more passionate about it than in the homebase The Netherlands.

WS – You’ve been producing music for some years, but before you started this chapter of your life, who were your biggest inspirations?

A – My biggest inspirations were always the best producers, before I started producing at the end of the nineties I was a real hardcore music lover. So if I had to name a few of the heroes from my youth in the mid-nineties that influenced me I would say Marc Acardipane, DJ Promo, Neophyte, Buzz Fuzz, Paul Elstak, Stunned Guys, Ruffneck and The Prophet.

Still they inspire me, some of their tracks are like blueprints to me, I know them in and out. DJ wise I was one of the biggest fans of DJ JDA, me and my friends visited so much of his gigs, his dj-ing style really influenced me. After this period I started listening to all kinds of music so my influences came from all kinds of producers and styles. I’m a real all-round music lover nowadays, my friends and colleagues call me a walking music encyclopedia haha.

Estuvimos allí como Gunz For Hire y me impresionó. El ambiente es verdaderamente asombroso.

WS – Last but not least, what do you think about the Spanish hard scene? Is there any Spanish artist you’re following?

A – I like the Spanish culture and language a lot. My name Adaro is for example from Spanish origin. The Hard scene in Spain is a great scene to play for! Some of my biggest fans are from Spain. There are some great clubs and festivals in Spain, Fabrik in Madrid for example is a dream for every dj to play. We have been there as Gunz For Hire and I was blown away, the atmosphere is really amazing.

WS – Preguntas cortas:

Tu canción favorita de hardstyle

Nasty Boyz – Angel (Hardstyle Masterz cut)

WS – Short questions:

Favourite hardstyle track

Nasty Boyz – Angel (Hardstyle Masterz cut)

Favourite non-hardstyle producer

Quincy Jones in alltime popmusic. Dr. Dre and Timbaland in hiphop/r&b. And for electronic music Tha Playah, Mad Dog, Axwell, Chocolate Puma, The Prodigy and Angerfist.

Name a festival you haven’t played in but you’d like to

I already played on the biggest hardstyle festivals so if I had to name one I didn’t play yet I would say Electric Love Festival in Austria, and I would love to play more in Spain ofcourse!

Most difficult track you’ve ever produced

For Adaro it was ‘I’m Alive’, and the remixes of ‘Answers’ and ‘F#ck the Fake Shit’ that I spent the most time on. The first one because I spent days and days on the right lead sound and mix and the other two I spent the most time on the right riffs and ideas. I threw away dozens of other ideas before I came to these.

Thank you for your time and for letting us know a little bit more about your musical career.

I would like to thank the Spanish hardstyle people for supporting my music and sending me a lot of love and messages. Don’t forget to check my latest track with Rude Convict & LXCPR: ‘My Eyes Spit Fire’, it’s out now on our label Roughstate. And more music is coming soon!
