Christian Smith es uno de los DJs underground más prestigiosos de las últimas décadas. Gracias a su sello Tronic, creado en 1997, y sus constantes producciones en grandes sellos como Drumcode, Minus, Cocoon… siempre ha sido un DJ muy aclamado y con muchos actuaciones por todo el mundo. Con motivo de su próximo “showcase” de Tronic en la Off Week en R33 y su futuro EP de remixes de su álbum ‘Synergy’ entrevistamos a Christian Smith.

Wololo Sound: Lo primero de todo, me gustaría preguntarte sobre tu infancia. Naciste en Suecia pero viviste unos años en Alemania, luego de mudaste a Nueva York y después de esto, pasaste varios años en Washington. ¿Crees que la oportunidad de conocer un montón de escenar diferentes es importante para el desarrollo como DJ? ¿Cuál de esas ciudades te influenció más?
Christian Smith: Siempre tuve ventaja por el hecho de que si tu eres un DJ internacional, puedes vivir donde quieras siempre que tengas cerca un buen aeropuerto. Realmente disfruto viviendo en diferentes lugares y ahora estoy muy feliz en Palma de Mallorca. Sin embargo, no creo que el hecho de vivir en tantos lugares diferentes haya influenciado mi musica demasiado. Generalmente estoy muy influenciado por el house de Chicago y el techno de Detroit. Me siento privilegiado de haber conocido tantas ciudades guays por el mundo.
Wololo Sound: First of all, I would like asking you about your childhood. You born in Sweden but you lived some years in Germany, then you moved to New York and after this, you spend some years in Washington. Do you think that the oportunity of knowing a lot of diferent electronic music scenes it’s important for your develop as a DJ? Which of this cities influenced more to you?
Christian Smith: I always took advantage of the fact that if you are an international DJ you can live where you want as long as you are close to a good airport. I really enjoyed living in many different places and am now very happy in Palma De Mallorca, Spain. I do not really think that living in all these different places has influenced my music a lot. Generally I am very influnced by Chicago house and Detroit techno. I feel privileged to have gotten to know so many cool cities around the world.
Wololo Sound: Cuando comenzaste a producir tech house en tu sello Tronic en los 90, la gente no pensaba que esa mezcla de house y techno pudiera estar en la cima de las listas y vender tan bien como el techno o el house pero ahora mismo el tech house se ha convertido en uno de los géneros más populares. ¿Qué opinas sobre esto? ¿Crees que el tech house está saturado o crees que su popularidad es algo bueno?
Christian Smith: A la gente le encanta seguir modas. Diría que el 90% de esos consumidores harían cualquier cosa que fuera popular en este momento. Me gusta de igual manera el techno y el house. Ahora mismo el techno se ha vuelto muy popular y eso está bien pero no cambiaré mi estilo porque quizás el año siguiente otra cosa será “guay”. El problema cuando a algo se le da mucho bombo es que muchos productores se suben al carro y el genero se satura con un montón de música mala. No importa si es deep house, tech house o techno. Por suerte, hay un montón de gente auténtica también que hace buena música original, tratando de innovar en vez de copiar el top 10 de Beatport.
Wololo Sound: When you started to produce tech house with your label Tronic in the 90s, people didn’t think that this mix of house and techno could be on the top of the charts and sell like techno or house but nowadays tech house become one of the most popular genres. What do you think about that? Do you think that tech house it’s saturated or do you think it’s possitive his popularity?
Christian Smith: People love to follow trends. I would say that 90% of all consumers are sheep and do whatever is popular at the moment. I love house and techno equally. Right now techno happens to be very popular and thats cool, but I wont change my style because maybe next year something else will be “cool”. The problem when something is very hyped is that many producers jump on the bandwagon and the genre becomes saturated and loads of bad music appears. It doesn´t matter if its deep house, tech house or techno. Thankfully there are always genuine people as well making good and innovative music, pushing forward instead of copying the Beatport top 10.
Wololo Sound: Hoy en día, tu y tu sello Tronic, estáis más centrados en el techno y Tronic es uno de los sellos más potentes de techno ahora mismo. ¿Cómo es el día a día de un sello como Tronic? ¿Cuánta gente trabaja en el sello? ¿Cambió mucho la manera de trabajar comparada con la de hace 20 años?
Christian Smith: Tengo un equipo de trabajo pequeño pero muy bueno. Tenemos sobre 3 lanzamientos mensuales actualmente. 20 años atrás, un lanzamiento mensuales era demasiado pero, en la era digital las cosas cambiaron y la gente parece tener un periodo de memoria más corto ahora por lo que la música no se mantiene popular durante mucho tiempo. Hace años, si tenías un buen tema, la gente lo pinchaba durante 4 o 6 meses, actualmente, si tienes un buen tema… ¡tendrás suerte si los DJs lo pinchan por 4 o 6 semanas! Después de haber dicho esto, no me importan los desafíos y realmente disfruto trabajando en Tronic y ayudando a construir las carreras de otros artistas.
Wololo Sound: Nowadays, you, and your label Tronic, are more focused in techno and Tronic is one of the best techno labels at the moment. How is the day by day of a label like Tonic? How many people works in the label? It changes a lot the way to work compared with 20 years ago?
Christian Smith: I have a small but very good team that I work with. We have arounnd 3 releases a month. Twenty years ago doing 1 release a month was a lot, but in the digital age things have changed and people seem to have a short term memory now so the music doesnt stay hot for a long time. Back in the days if you had a big record, people would play it for 4-6 months. Now if you have a big record you are lucky if the djs play it for 4-6 weeks! Having said that I do not mind a challenge and really enjoy working on Tronic and helping build peoples careers.

Wololo Sound: Tronic ha lanzado muchas canciones de DJs españoles como Coyu, Aitor Ronda, AFFKT… ¿Qué opinas de los DJs españoles y su escena? ¿Hay algún DJ español con el que te gustaría colaborar?
Christian Smith: España siempre ha tenido una escena techno muy fuerte durante muchos años. Yo consideraría a España como una de las mejores escenas techno del mundo. Soy muy feliz de ver cada vez más DJs españoles apareciendo en la escena y haciéndolo bien.
Wololo Sound: Tronic released several tracks from spanish DJs like Coyu, Aitor Ronda, AFFKT… What do you think of spanish DJs and his scene? There are some spanish DJs that you would like to colaborate with him?
Christian Smith: Spain has had a very strong techno scene for many years. I would consider it one of the strongest techno scenes in the world. I am happy to see that more Spanish producers are popping up now and are doing well.
Wololo Sound: Hablando de España, tendrás tu propia fiesta de tu sello Tronic en la Off Week the Barcelona el 15 de junio en R33. ¿Cuales son tus experiencias en el Sonar? ¿Crees que el Sonar y la Off Week están al mismo nivel que el ADE en Amsterdam o la Miami Music Week?
Christian Smith: Tengo muchísimas ganas de hacer el showcase de Tronic otro año más durante la Off Week en R33. Tenemos un cartel muy potente y el club tiene aforo de 500 personas así que estará lleno. En los últimos años hemos hecho eventos más grandes en la playa pero tristemente ahora es ilegal hacer fiestas en la playa. Me encanta Barcelona y creo que será otro evento legendario. Con respecto en cómo comparar Sonar con ADE y la Miami Music Week, todos son diferentes y buenos a su manera, diría que Sonar está menos enfocada en el negocio y más en la fiesta.
Wololo Sound: Talking about our country, Spain, you are going to hosting a showcase party of Tronic during the off week the 15th June at R33. Whats your experience at Sonar? Do you think that Sonar and off week are at the same level as ADE in Amsterdam or Miami Music Week in Miami?
Christian Smith: I am very much looking forward to doing the Tronic showcase again during Sonar OFF week at R33. We have a super strong line-up and the club is only for 500 people so it will be packed. The last few years i always did bigger events on the beach but now sadly its become illegal to do any beach partys. I do love Barcelona and think its going to be another legendary event. With regards to how Sonar compars to ADE and MMW, they all are different and good in their own ways. Sonar I would say is less for business and more for partying.
Wololo Sound: También has tenido tu propia fiesta de Tronic en Eden Ibiza el 23 de mayo. ¿Qué significó esta fiesta para tu sello? ¿Te gustaría tener tu propia fiesta toda la temporada en Ibiza en el futuro?
Christian Smith: Ibiza es un lugar muy complicado para hacer eventos regularmente. En el evento que hice de Tronic en mayo en Eden tuvimos sobre 2500 personas, me quedé asombrado. Fue un enorme éxito. Fue realmente bonito ver a tanta gente considerando que mayo es un mes de temporada baja en Ibiza. Hago un montón de eventos de Tronic alrededor del mundo y es una buena manera de darles impulso y una oportunidad de pinchar en discotecas grandes.
Wololo Sound: You also hosted a showcase party at Eden Ibiza the 23rd May. What did this mean for your label and brand? Would you like to host a season party at in Ibiza in the future?
Christian Smith: Ibiza is a VERY tricky place to do regular events. I did a Tronic showcase at Eden in May and we had around 2,500 people. I was blown away. It was a huge success. It felt really nice to see so many people come out for this considering May is a really slow month in Ibiza. I’m doing lots of Tronic events around the globe and find it a great way to push the up and coming talent and give them an oppotunity to play in big rooms.
Wololo Sound: El 25 de junio vas a lanzar un EP de remixes de tu álbum ‘Synergy’, ¿Cuál es el proceso para escoger los artistas que remezclarán las canciones? ¿Recibiste muchos remixes y luego escogiste tus favoritos o le pediste a varios DJs que remezclaran una de tus canciones?
Christian Smith: Fue muy divertido trabajar en ‘Synergy’. Me dí cuenta que los artistas debemos trabajar más conjuntamente, fue divertido y bueno ver a todos involucrados en el proyecto. Para estos remixes quería escoger a artistas menos conocidos y estoy muy contento con el resultado, todos me entregaron remixes realmente geniales. No tengo uno favorito pero diría que los remixes de Shall Ocin y Petter B son los que mas pincho en mis sets ahora mismo pero también me gustan el de Oliver Deutschmann y Zeta Reticula. Son buenos temas underground.
Wololo Sound: The 25th June you are going to release an EP of remixes of your album ‘Synergy’. What was the process of chosing the artists that remixed the track? Do you recieve the remixes and then you choose your favourites or you ask to the DJs to remix one of your songs?
Christian Smith: The ‘Synergy’ project was a lot of fun to work with. I find that these days we artists should work more closer together. It fun, and good for eveybody involved. As for these remixes I wanted to pick some less obvious names and am really happy with the outcome, everybody delivered really cool remixes. I do not have a favorite one, but I guess I´m playing the Shall Ocin and Petter B remixes the most in my sets right now. But I also really like the Oliver Deutschmann and Zeta Reticula remixes! Proper underground stuff.
Wololo Sound: Casi estamos en la temporada de verano, ¿qué planes tienes para los próximos meses? ¿Habrá nuevos lanzamientos? ¿En qué eventos estás deseando pinchar?
Christian Smith: Para mi el verano no marca la diferencia. Siempre trabajo duro y estoy constantemente de tour, haciendo música, con mi podcast semanal y tratando de buscar un balance con mi vida personal también. Puede ser duro, pero trato de tener un fin de semana libre cada tres meses. No es demasiado pero si te gusta lo que haces, no es duro.
Wololo Sound: It’s almost the summer season, what plans do you have for this next months? There are going to be some new releases? What events you are looking forward to play it?
Christian Smith: For me summer makes no difference. I always work my ass off. I´m constantly on tour, always make music, have my weekly radio show, and trying to find a balance in personal life as well. It can be tricky, but I try to take a weekend off every 3 months. Its not a lot but if you do what you love its not so hard.
