Entrevistamos a MUZZ, uno de los artistas más famosos de Monstercat, quien nos habla sobre su nuevo álbum ‘The Promised Land‘
Wololo Sound: Hola Mustafa. Lo primero de todo, muchas gracias por dedicar a Wololo Sound tu tiempo para esta entrevista. Vamos con una serie de preguntas acerca de MUZZ y tu nuevo álbum.
Para quienes no estén familiarizados contigo y tu trabajo, cuéntanos un poco sobre quién es MUZZ. ¿Qué te llevo a pasar de Muzzy a MUZZ y qué ha significado para ti y tu carrera este cambio de nombre?
MUZZ: ¡Hola a todos! Mi nombres es MUZZ. Soy un productor de Reino Unido conocido por hacer drum & bass. Mi álbum debut ‘The Promised Land‘ sale este 3 de septiembre y no puedo esperar a que lo escuchéis. Es un nuevo tipo de proyecto para mí que experimenta con diferentes géneros y sonidos a los que habéis podido escuchar con la música tradicional de MUZZ.
Wololo Sound: Hello Mustafa. First of all, thank you for giving Wololo Sound some of your time to do this interview. Let’s go with some questions about MUZZ and your new album.
For those who are not familiarized with you and your work, tell us a little bit about who MUZZ is. Why did you decide to change your name from Muzzy to MUZZ and what has it meant to you and your career?
MUZZ: Hello everyone! My name is MUZZ. I’m a UK producer known for making drum n bass. My debut album ‘The Promised Land’ is out on September 3 and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. It’s a new type of project for me that experiments with different genres and sounds from what you might be used to with traditional MUZZ music.
WS: A lo largo de tu carrera como artista te hemos visto en diferentes sellos como son UKF y Liquicity, pero sin duda es Monstercat donde más te hemos escuchado. ¿Cómo es trabajar con la familia de Monstercat? ¿Considerarías que han sido una figura clave a la hora de crecer como artista?
M: Dudo que estuviese donde estoy ahora sin Monstercat. Trabajar con ellos es un privilegio y me han demostrado un incomparable y absoluto nivel de apoyo y tutoría desde el comienzo de mi carrera, cuando no sabía nada de nada acerca de lo que estaba haciendo. Les debo gran parte de mi posición en la música dance, la increíble libertad creativa, y la relación de apoyo que tenemos.
WS: Throughout your career as an artist we have seen you in different labelslike UKF Music and Liquicity, but Monstercat is definitely where we havelistened to you the most. How is it like to work with the Monstercat family? Would you say that they have been a key part of your development as an artist?
M: I doubt I’d be where I am today without Monstercat. Working with them is a privilege and they have shown me an absolutely unparalleled level of support and mentorship very early in my career when I knew absolutely nothing about what I was doing. I owe a lot of my position in dance music to them, the amazing creative freedom, and the supportive relationship we have together.
WS: ‘The Promised Land‘ es tu primer álbum de estudio, el cuál hemos podido ir descubriendo poco a poco y que sigue una línea de extremo cuidado del sonido caracterizado por el drum & bass al estilo más rockero de MUZZ. ¿Qué significa para ti el lanzamiento del álbum?
M: Lo principal que quería hacer con el álbum era empezar a expandirme fuera del drum & bass y empezar a hacer nuevos géneros. La gente tiene la impresión de que, como hago drum & bass todo el rato, sólo escucho este género y eso es completamente falso. Los que me conocen saben que escucho literalmente todo tipo de música. Quería incorporar todas esas diferentes influencias en un solo proyecto y enseñar mi talento fuera del terreno del puro drum & bass. Este álbum en general significa mucho para mí. ¡Es mi primer proyecto completo y es emocionante que por fin esté aquí!
WS: ¿Qué nuevos proyectos tienes en mente?
M: ¡Simplemente necesito pasar por la semana de lanzamiento del álbum y entonces podré empezar a pensar sobre qué vendrá después!
WS: The Promised Land is your first studio album, which we have been able to discover little by little and which follows a line of the sound characterized by MUZZ’s rock-styled drum & bass. What does the release of your new album mean to you?
M: The main thing that I wanted to do with the album was start expanding from drum n bass and start doing other genres. People have this impression of me, because I make drum n bass all the time, that I only listen to the genre and that’s completely untrue. People who know me know I listen to literally all kinds of music. I wanted to incorporate all those different influences into one project and show my talents outside of the pure dnb realm. This album overall means so much to me. It’s my first full length project and it’s so exciting that it’s finally here!
WS: What new projects do you have in mind?
M: I just need to get through album launch week then I can start thinking about what’s next!
WS: Por lo que hemos podido escuchar en ‘The Promised Land’, has trabajado en temas muy distintos entre sí, teniendo unos muy agresivos como ‘The Warehouse’ y otros más relajados y melódicos como ‘Somewhere Else’. ¿Durante cuánto tiempo has estado trabajando en tu nuevo álbum?
M: Habría dedicado mucho más tiempo a crear este álbum, pero entonces llegó el COVID, así que dejé de hacer tantos tours y me centré realmente en la producción. Todo este año ha girado en torno al álbum y estoy realmente agradecido de haber tenido tiempo para hacerlo perfecto.
WS: According to what we have listened to in ‘The Promised Land’, you have worked in tracks very different from each other, having more aggressive ones such as ‘The Warehouse’ and other more relaxed and melodic ones such as ‘Somewhere Else’. How much time have you spent on the creation of the album?
M: I would have spent a lot more time on crafting this album, but then COVID hit and I managed to stop touring as much and really focus on production. This whole year has been all about the album and I’m really grateful I’ve had the time to dedicate to making it perfect.
WS: Cuando hablamos de MUZZ, todo el mundo te asocia al drum & bass. Pero sin embargo en tu nuevo álbum hemos podido ver cómo no sólo te has ceñido a este estilo. ¿Qué te ha llevado a experimentar de esta manera?
M: Siempre me he sentido en cierto modo como un forastero del género, sin haber lanzado realmente con sellos de drum & bass o sin participar en muchos eventos de sellos. Es poco ortodoxo para un artista de drum & bass lanzar en un sello que trata con la amplia escena del pop y el dance, sin embargo con este álbum me he sentido más inclinado a abrirme más a otros géneros y estilos antes que cerrarme exclusivamente al drum & bass. Me encanta el género, y siempre lo hará, pero también adoro muchos otros géneros y no quiero cerrarles las puertas. El futuro de cualquier género es evolucionar y mezclarse con otros estilos y nuevos sonidos, que es lo que he estado haciendo desde que empecé a hacer música, y este álbum explora todos esos nuevos territorios.
WS: When we talk about MUZZ, everyone relates you with drum & bass. However, in your new album we have seen how you don’t stick to the genre. What made you want to try with other genres rather than drum & bass?
M: I’ve always felt like somewhat of an outsider to the genre, never really releasing with Drum & Bass labels or doing many label events. It’s unorthodox for a Drum & Bass artist to be releasing with a label dealing with the broader dance and pop scene, however with this album I’ve felt more inclined to open up my sound more to other genres and styles rather than limiting them to exclusively D&B. I love the genre, and always will, but I also love many other genres and don’t want to close those doors. The future of any genre is to evolve it and mash it with other styles and new sounds, which is what I’ve always done since I started making music, and this album explores those new territories.
WS: La música de MUZZ esta más relacionada con el tipo de drum & bass que se escucha en Estado Unidos, el cuál es más comercial que el europeo y está caracterizado por sonidos electro y dubstep. Ahora que se está volviendo popular de nuevo en el país, ¿qué diferencias vez entre la escena americana y la europea, hablando de line ups de festivales y público?
M: Es difícil comparar las dos puesto que el origen del drum & bass esta en Reino Unido. Está cruzando lentamente hacia Norte América pero creo que las raíces y el sonido tradicional siempre se quedará en Reino Unido. En cuanto a festivales, ¡creo que todos ellos tendrá que ser un poco diferentes a partir de ahora dada la actual situación del mundo! Una cosa que tiene Reino Unido y que no he visto mucho en América es la comunidad underground de drum & bass.
WS: MUZZ’s music is more related to the kind of drum & bass that is listened to in the United States, which is more commercial than the European one and characterized by electro and dubstep sounds. Now that it is becoming popular again in the country, what differences do you see between the American scene and the European one, talking about festivals’ line ups and crowds?
M: It’s difficult to compare the two since the inception of Drum n Bass comes from the UK. It’s slowly making a cross over to North America but I think the roots and traditional sound will always lie in the UK. In terms of festivals, I think all festivals are going to have to look a bit different from now on given our current state of the world! One thing the UK has that I haven’t seen as much in America is that underground drum and bass community.
WS: En los últimos meses, hemos podido apreciar una creciente influencia del techno en el drum & bass. Está claro que es el género del momento pero, ¿cómo crees que pueden congeniar ambos estilos en un futuro? Si tuvieras que mezclar en un tema drum & bass con otro estilo que no tiene nada que ver, ¿cuál crees que sonaría bien?
M: Creo que siempre hay hueco para todos los géneros. Esa es la belleza de la música electrónica, experimentar con nuevos sonidos y combinar nuevos géneros es lo que lo hace especial.
WS: In the last months, we have been able to appreciate an increasing influence of techno in drum & bass. It is for sure the most popular genre nowadays but, how do you think that these two genres will get on together in the future?
M: I think there’s always room for all genres. That’s the beauty of electronic music, experimenting with new sounds and combining new genres is what makes it so special.
WS: ¿Qué otros artistas han sido siempre referentes para ti? ¿Qué artistas has descubierto recientemente y recomendarías a nuestros lectores?
M: Puedo agradecerle a Pendulum el haberme introducido en el drum & bass, ellos eran los únicos haciendo esa mezcla de rock & roll con drum & bass y cambió completamente mi forma de ver la música. A día de hoy estoy escuchando a Grimes, Rezz, Charlie XCX, Fade Black, Oakwite, Loathe, G Jones… todos ellos ahora mismo están en repetición para mí.
WS: Which other artists have been always inspirations and role models for you as an artist? Which ones have you discovered lately and would recommend to our readers?
M: I can thank Pendulum for introducing me to drum n Bass, they were the only ones doing that mix of rock n roll with drum n bass and it completely changed the way I look at music. Currently I’m listening to: Grimes, Rezz, Charli XCX, Fade Black, Oakwite, Loathe, G Jones are all currently on repeat for me.
