Tras revolucionar la escena hard el pasado año mediante el release de su álbum ‘Artificial Intoxication’, y justo semanas después de hostear su propio evento X-Qlusive y lanzar su single ‘Vendetta’, nos hemos sentado para charlar con el dúo escocés Rebelion. El éxito de este evento, próximas colaboraciones, su futuro LP ‘The Second Dose’… Acompáñanos en esta entrevista para conocer mejor a Gary y Raymond.
Wololo Sound – ¡Hola Raymond y Gary! En primer lugar, queremos agradeceros esta entrevista. Lleváis sacando música desde 2015, y nos gustaría volver atrás en el tiempo y preguntaros por vuestros inicios. ¿Cómo y por qué comenzasteis pinchando y produciendo música? ¿Y por qué elegisteis Rebelion como nombre artístico?
Rebelion – Hey, ¡gracias por tenernos aquí! Primero comenzamos produciendo y pinchar vino después. Habíamos ido a muchas fiestas así que teníamos una idea real de lo que pasaba en la pista, lo cual nos ayudó mucho al principio. El nombre es realmente una referencia a cómo vemos nuestra música, a que no nos conformamos con lo que el resto hace, etc.
Wololo Sound – Hello Raymond and Gary! First of all we’d like to thank you for this interview. You have been releasing music since 2015, and we would like to go back in the days and ask you about your beginnings. How and why did you start DJing and producing music? And why did you choose Rebelion as your artistic name?
Rebelion – Hey, thanks for having us! We started producing first and then DJing came later. We attended lots of parties so we had a real feel for the dancefloor which helped a lot in the beginning. The name is really a reference to how we see our music, so not conforming to what everyone else does, etc.
WS – Hemos tenido la oportunidad de hablar con vosotros unos días después de vuestro evento X-Qlusive. ¿Qué pensasteis cuando Q-Dance os brindó la oportunidad de hacer esto posible? ¿Sentís que algo ha cambiado en vuestras vidas después de este evento?
R – Cuando nos preguntaron estábamos muy emocionados porque realmente queríamos hacer nuestro propio evento grande y, por supuesto, X-Qlusive es un honor enorme para un artista de hardstyle. No sentimos que nada haya cambiado, para ser sinceros. Estamos muy contentos con cómo fue y fue un trabajo duro, pero seguiremos avanzando hacia el próximo objetivo.
WS – We’ve got the chance to talk with you some days after your X-Qlusive event. What did you think when Q-Dance gave you the opportunity to make this happen? Do you feel that something has changed in your lives after this event?
R – When they asked us we were very excited as we already really wanted to do our own large event and of course X-Qlusive is a huge honour for a hardstyle artist. We don’t feel like it changed anything, to be honest. We are very happy with how it went and a lot of hard work went into it but we will keep pushing to the next goal now.
WS – Dos semanas antes de la fiesta lanzasteis ‘Vendetta’, la banda sonora oficial de X-Qlusive Rebelion. ¿Qué significa la canción para vosotros? ¿Será una especie de un “himno de Rebelion” de ahora en adelante?
R – Para ser sinceros, no hicimos ‘Vendetta’ para ese propósito, lo hicimos para el Qlimax. Queríamos un tema realmente épico que tuviera potencia y emoción unidos. Después, tras el Qlimax, nos dimos cuenta de que era una gran canción para ser banda sonora del evento.
WS – Two weeks before the party you released ‘Vendetta’, the original soundtrack of X-Qlusive Rebelion. What does the track mean for you? Will it be kind of a “Rebelion anthem” from now on?
R – To be honest, we never made ‘Vendetta’ for that purpose, we made it for Qlimax. We wanted a really epic track that had power and emotion together. Then after Qlimax, we realized it was a great track for the OST.
WS – Es un hecho que el hardstyle que todos conocemos se está convirtiendo progresivamente en rawstyle. Esto definitivamente tiene algo que ver con vuestro éxito, junto con el de otros grandes artistas de raw en la escena. También, muchos productores de rawstyle están emergiendo. ¿Qué pensáis sobre este cambio en el mundo del hard? ¿Quién diríais que será la próxima estrella en la escena raw?
R – Definitivamente no vemos el hardstyle de esa forma, por subgéneros. Nunca lo hemos hecho. En nuestra opinión, tienes diferentes artistas con distintos sonidos característicos, y si son más duros o más suaves no debería importar. Nosotros hacemos el estilo que preferimos cada vez que estamos en el estudio. Al fin y al cabo, es la audiencia quien elige lo que se vuelve popular, así que no nos centramos en eso. ¡Definitivamente Adjuzt es alguien a tener en cuenta!
WS – It’s a fact that hardstyle, as we all know it, is slowly turning into rawstyle. This definitely has something to do with your success, along with the success of other big rawstyle artists in the scene. Also, a lot of rawstyle producers are emerging. What do you think about this change in the world of hard music? Who would you say could be the next star in the raw scene?
R – We definitely don’t view hardstyle in that sub-genre way, we never really did. In our opinion, you have different artists with different signature sounds, whether that’s harder or softer shouldn’t matter. We make whatever style we feel at the time when in the studio. In the end, the audience decides what becomes popular or not so we don’t focus on that. Adjuzt is definitely one to watch!
WS – Ahora echemos la vista atrás a 2022, que fue con diferencia el año más exitoso en la carrera de Rebelion, principalmente por el lanzamiento de vuestro álbum ‘Artificial Intoxication’, que os llevó a ganar el premio a Mejores Artistas Hardstyle en los Hardstyle Awards 2022. Cuando comenzasteis a trabajar en él, ¿cómo de lejos pensabais que llegaríais con este gran álbum? ¿Esperabais tantísimo éxito?
R – En la época del coronavirus nos dimos cuenta rápidamente de que podríamos emplear el tiempo para encerrarnos en el estudio y tomarnos el tiempo necesario para mejorar nuestras habilidades. En 2021 vimos que probablemente el mundo volvería a la normalidad en 2022 así que planeamos que el álbum fuese una “bienvenida de vuelta”. Pusimos mucho tiempo en él y definitivamente tuvimos algunos problemas, así que fue increíble ver la respuesta de nuestros fans. Siempre confiamos en nosotros mismos pero esta vez probablemente excedió nuestras expectativas, ¡lo cual es genial!
WS – Now let’s take a look back at 2022, which was by far the most successful year in Rebelion’s career, mainly because of the release of your ‘Artificial Intoxication’ album which led you to get the Best Hardstyle Artist award in the Hardstyle Awards 2022. When you started working on it, how far did you think you would get with this huge album? Did you expect so much success?
R – In corona times we realized pretty quickly we could use the time to lock ourselves in the studio to really take our time and improve our skills. In 2021 we started to see maybe the world would open up in 2022 so we planned for the album to be the “welcome back”. We put a lot of time into it and definitely had some struggles so it was amazing to see the response from our fans. We always have confidence but this time it probably exceeded our expectations which is great!
WS – Probablemente vuestra canción más conocida del álbum es ‘City Lights’, que suma más de 3,5 millones de reproducciones en Spotify ahora mismo y que fue galardonada con la segunda posición en el Top 100 de Q-Dance el año pasado. ¿Cómo fue trabajar en este tema?
R – Sí, esta canción es muy especial para nosotros y realmente fue el primer tema en el que trabajamos para el álbum, así que nos dio mucha motivación para finalizar el resto del proyecto.
WS – Maybe the most famous song on the album is ‘City Lights’, which has more than 3.5 million streams on Spotify right now and was awarded with the second place in the Q-Dance Top 100 last year. How was it like working on this track?
R – Yes, this track is very special to us and it was actually the first track we worked on for the album so it gave us a lot of motivation to finish the rest of the project.
WS – Acabamos de hablar de una de vuestras canciones más populares… pero a veces lo más popular no se corresponde con lo mejor. ¿Cuáles son vuestros temas favoritas de Rebelion de todos los tiempos y por qué?
R – Muy difícil responder porque cada etapa tiene su propio ganador por diferentes razones. ‘Uprising’, ‘Bring It On’ y ‘City Lights’ tienen todas recuerdos unidos a ellas, así que son las que destacan.
WS – We just talked about one of your most popular songs… but sometimes the most popular does not mean the best. What are your all-time favourite Rebelion tracks and why?
R – Very difficult to answer as each era has its own winner for different reasons. ‘Uprising’, ‘Bring it On’ and ‘City Lights’ all have great memories attached to them so they stand out.
WS – Durante vuestro set en el Qlimax el año pasado estrenasteis ‘Numb’, vuestra nueva colaboración con Vertile. Esto llega después de lanzar ‘Simulation’, otra collab con él. Parece que sois muy compatibles, y ya se sabe que haréis un B2B tanto en Rebirth como en Tomorrowland. ¿Estáis preparando algo especial? ¿Se convertirá esto en un set recurrente?
R – Sí, trabajar con Mees es muy fácil. ¡Realmente hicimos ‘Simulation’ en unos pocos días! Definitivamente trabajaremos en algunas cosas para estos festivales y veremos qué tal va.
WS – During your set at Qlimax last year, you premiered ‘Numb’, your new collab with Vertile. This comes after releasing ‘Simulation’, another collab with him. It looks like you are very compatible, and it is known that you will make a B2B with him both at Rebirth and at Tomorrowland. Are you preparing anything special? Will this become a recurrent live act?
R – Yes, working with Mees is very easy. Actually, ‘Simulation’ was made in a few days! We will definitely work on some stuff for those future bookings and see how it goes!
WS – En 2022 trabajasteis con algunos artistas excepcionales: Sub Zero Project, Hard Driver, Sefa… Y ya hemos podido escuchar algunos estrenos de nuevas colaboraciones para este año, con Vertile y Adjuzt. ¿Podemos esperar algunas nuevas para 2023? ¿Nos podéis contar qué tenéis en mente?
R – Tenemos algunas brutales planeadas, sí, ¡pero aún no lo podemos contar!
WS – In 2022, you worked with some outstanding artists: Sub Zero Project, Hard Driver, Sefa… And we already heard some premieres of new collabs for this year, with Vertile and Adjuzt. Can we expect some new ones for 2023? Would you tell us who do you have in mind?
R – We have some massive ones planned yes but we can’t say just yet!
WS – Durante las últimas semanas habéis estado hypeando a vuestros fans en redes sociales sobre ‘The Second Dose’, que es vuestro nuevo show en directo, estrenado en el X-Qlusive. ¿Nos podéis contar algo más para los fans que no pudieron asistir al evento? ¿Lo seguirá un nuevo álbum, la continuación de ‘The First Dose’?
R – ‘The Second Dose’ va a ser un álbum, ¡sí! Hemos mejorado todo del show original: nuevas visuales, nueva música y nuevos outfits. ¡Tenemos mucho más para añadir y la gente lo verá este año!
WS – During the last few weeks, you were hyping your fans on social media about ‘The Second Dose’, which is your new live act, premiered at X-Qlusive. Can you tell a bit more about it for the fans who could not attend the event? Will it be followed by a new album, a follow-up of ‘The First Dose’?
R – ‘The Second Dose’ will be an album, yes! We upgraded everything from the original show so new visuals, music and outfits. We have a lot more to add in which people will see over the next year!
WS – Al final de vuestro set Overdose en el X-Qlusive estrenasteis una nueva colaboración con Dimitri K y The Dark Horror, con quien ya trabajasteis en ‘Side FX’s’ el año pasado. Parece que el uptempo os pega mucho. ¿Os veremos produciéndolo y pinchándolo más a menudo?
R – Nos gusta hacer casi todo, pero este tipo de canciones siempre son muy divertidas porque es más una experiencia que un viaje musical.
WS – At the end of your Overdose set at X-Qlusive you premiered a new collab with Dimitri K and The Dark Horror, with whom you already worked in ‘Side FX’s’ last year. It seems that you stick really well with uptempo music. Will we see you producing and playing it live more often?
R – We like making almost everything but these kind of tracks are always so fun to make because its more of an experience than a musical journey.
WS – La última vez que os pudimos ver en España fue el pasado diciembre en Fabrik. ¿Disfrutáis pinchando para el público español? ¿Os veremos pronto de vuelta a nuestro país?
R – El público español es siempre increíble, ¡sobre todo en Fabrik! ¡Volveremos en 2023, seguro!
WS – The last time we could see you in Spain was last December in Fabrik. Do you enjoy playing for the Spanish crowd? Will we see you soon in our country?
R – The Spanish crowd is always insane, especially Fabrik! We will be back in 2023 for sure!
