WS: ¡Hola Noemi! En primer lugar, muchas gracias por contar con nosotros para esta entrevista, es un placer tener a una de las estrellas más prometedoras de la industria techno. Nos gustaría empezar con lo básico. ¿Cómo fueron tus primeros pasos en la industria de la música electrónica?
N: ¡Hola! Muchas gracias por la invitación, es un absoluto placer para mí. Vengo de Polonia de una pequeña ciudad industrial llamada Kedzierzyn-Kozle.
Había un pequeño club de música electrónica y, desde que tenía 18 años, iba casi todos los fines de semana. También visitaba clubes y pequeños festivales de la región. Siempre miraba al DJ e intentaba averiguar cómo hacía esa magia. Me fascinaba cómo el DJ podía controlar al público con su música. Yo también quería intentarlo. Decidí comprarme mi primer equipo de DJ y empecé a aprender a pinchar. No fue fácil, porque nadie quería ayudarme, pero lo hice y ahora estoy donde estoy.
Wololo Sound – Hello Noemi! First of all, thank you very much for joining us for this interview, it’s a pleasure has one of the most forthcomings starts in techno industry. We would like to start with the basics. How were your first steps in the electronic music industry?
Noemi Black: Hey! Thank you for the invitation. It’s an absolute pleasure for me. I’m coming from south Poland, from the small industrial city Kedzierzyn-Kozle. There was one small club with electronic music and since I was 18, I was there almost every weekend. I was visiting also clubs and smaller festivals in the Region. I was always looking at the DJ and trying to figure out, how he is making this magic. I was fascinated by how Dj can control the crowd with his music. I wanted to try this also. I decided to buy my first DJ gear and start to learn how to spin the beats. It was not easy, because no one wanted to help me, but I did it, and now I’m here where I am!
WS: Llevas muchos años en la industria del techno, pero ¿cuáles fueron tus raíces en la música? ¿Qué inspira a Noemi Black? ¿Qué consideras que es lo más distintivo en tu sonido?
NB: Como dije antes, vengo del sur de Polonia, de la región industrial de Silesia. La música underground como el techno era, y sigue siendo, muy popular allí.
El club en mi ciudad era un lugar con música comercial, así que después de unos meses se volvió aburrido y demasiado suave para mí. Empecé a buscar un nuevo sonido y lo encontré en la edición polaca del conocido evento alemán Mayday. Estaba en el cielo. Por primera vez, escuché el verdadero techno, schranz y hard techno.
A partir de ese momento, estaba segua de que quería enfocarme en este tipo de música. Techno industrial, duro y oscuro. Todavía estoy tratando de seguir este camino.
WS: Many years on the techno industry but about your roots in music, what were them? What does inspire Noemi Black? What you consider is the most distinguishing stuff in your sound?
NB: As I said before, I’m coming from South Poland, from the industrial region of Silesia. Underground music as Techno was, and still is, very popular there.
The club in my city was a place with commercial music, so after a few months, it has become boring and too soft for me. I started to search for a new sound, and I found it. At the Polish edition of the well-known German event Mayday. I was in heaven. For the first time, I heard the real techno, schranz, and hard techno.
From this moment It was sure for me, that I want to focus on this kind of music. Industrial, hard, and dark Techno. I’m still trying to follow this path.
WS: La siguiente pregunta es obligatoria para los artistas de techno hoy en día, últimamente hemos visto cómo el techno como género se está volviendo bastante mainstream, ¿qué piensas al respecto?
NB: ¡Estaba esperando este momento durante unos 10 años! Siempre fue mi deseo poder pinchar la música que más me gusta en los festivales más grandes y en los mejores clubs. Ahora es el momento. No veo nada malo en esto. Debemos tratar de contagiar a tantas personas como sea posible con el sonido del techno. No puede ser solo una tendencia. Debe quedarse así para siempre.
Tal vez en la opinión de algunos DJs y fans de techno, esta música debería quedarse para siempre en los sótanos y clubs pequeños. Pero yo quiero compartirla con tantas personas como pueda. ¡Ahora todos tenemos la oportunidad de hacerlo!
WS: The following question is an obligatory for techno artists nowadays, lately we’re watching how techno as a genre is becoming quite mainstream, what do you think about it?
NB: I was waiting for this moment for about 10 years! It was always my desire to be able to play my beloved music at the biggest festivals and in the best clubs. Now is the moment. I see nothing wrong in this. We have to try to infect as many people as we can with the techno sound. It can’t be just a trend. It should stay like this forever.
Maybe in the opinion of some DJs and techno fans, this music should stay forever in the basements and small clubs. But I want to share it with as many people as I can. Now we all have the chance to do it!
WS: Desde principios de los 2000 en la escena, son casi 20 años en el juego, ¿cómo has hecho frente a los constantes cambios que se producen en la industria de la música electrónica?
NB: El primer evento oficial en el que pinché fue en 2012. El techno entonces no era tan popular como ahora, y ha empezado a ser cada vez más lento. Ahora vamos en la otra dirección. Cada pocos años tenemos una nueva tendencia en la música. Siempre he intentado adaptarme a las nuevas situaciones. Pero nunca me olvido de mis raíces. Mi techno siempre ha sido directo y con ritmos ondulantes. Y siempre será así.
WS: From early 2000’s on the scene, there are almost 20 years on the game, how have you coped with the constant change happening in the electronic music industry?
NB: The first official event I played, was in 2012. Techno then was not so popular as now is, and has started becoming slower and slower. Now we are going in the other direction. Every few years we have a new trend in the music. I always tried to adapt myself to the new situations. But I never forget about my roots. My Techno was always straight and forward, with rolling beats. And it will be always like this.
WS: Una pregunta más centrada en las actuaciones de los artistas de techno house o drum and bass es el eterno dilema de si prefieren club o festival, ¿qué prefieres?
NB: Y es una pregunta muy difícil. Depende. Depende del público, de la acústica y de la organización del evento. Hay muchos factores. A veces se siente más energía en un club con 200 personas. Pero, sin mentiras. Si ves a varios miles de personas de pie frente a ti. ¡Claro que sí! ¡Por eso hago lo que hago!
WS: A question more focused on the performances of techno house or drum and bass artists is the eternal dilemma of whether they prefer club or festival, which do you prefer?
NB: And it’s a very tough question. It depends. It depends on the crowd, from the acoustics and organization of the event. There are so many factors. Sometimes you can feel more energy in the tinny club with 200 people. But, without lies. If you see a few thousands of people standing in front of you. Hell yeah! That’s why I’m making this!
WS: Aparte del techno, ¿hay algún otro género de música electrónica que te produzca interés, por ejemplo, drum and bass, house o trance?
NB: Al principio de mi andadura, escuchaba más electro-house que techno. Ahora para relajarme me gusta escuchar algunos sets de progressive o melodic house. Intento estar al día de todos los géneros e inspirarme en todos ellos.
WS: Out of techno, do you have another electronic music genre which it produces interest on you, for example drum and bass, house or trance?
NB: At the beginning of my journey, I was listening more to the electro-house genre than Techno. Now to chill out I like to hear some Progressive or Melodic House sets. I’m trying to be up to date with all the genres and trying to take some inspiration from all of them.
WS: Últimamente estas viviendo en Mallorca, pero DOMO en Granada fue vuestra primera vez en España, ¿cómo fue vuestro debut? ¿Conocías algo de la escena española?
NB: Me mudé a Mallorca desde Alemania. Estuve varias veces en la isla y me enamoré de la naturaleza y de la gente. Tenía claro que algún día me mudaría aquí. Sí, mi concierto en DOMO fue mi debut en España, y no podría imaginar uno mejor. La energía del público, la hospitalidad y los cientos de mensajes de los fans después de mi actuación. Permanecerá en mi corazón para siempre.
Por supuesto, conocía la escena española antes de trasladarme aquí. Para mí, es una de las mejores y más grandes de Europa. Tenéis muchos grandes clubes y festivales. Muchos DJs de otros países sueñan con la posibilidad de pinchar aquí. Espero poder pinchar más en España en el futuro. Ya tengo algunos conciertos planeados aquí y estoy deseando que lleguen.
WS: You’re living in Mallorca lately but DOMO in Granada was your first time in Spain, how your debut was? Did you know something about Spanish scene?
NB: I moved to Mallorca from Germany. I was on the Island a few times, and I was in love with nature and the people. It was clear to me that one day I’ll move here. Yes, my Gig at DOMO was my Spanish debut, and I couldn’t imagine a better one. The energy of the crowd, hospitality, and the hundred of messages from fans after my performance. It will stay in my heart forever.
Of course, I knew the Spanish scene before moving here. For me, it’s one of the best and biggest in Europe. You have many great Clubs and Festivals. Many DJs from other countries are dreaming about the possibility to play here. I hope I’ll be able to play more in Spain in the future. Some gigs are already planned and can’t wait for them!
WS: Los artistas siempre están trabajando; ¿tienes próximos proyectos en camino?
NB: Por supuesto que sí 🙂 Ahora mismo estoy centrado en el género hard techno. Me gusta cómo ha evolucionado este género, por eso decidí profundizar en el. Ya he terminado tres temas. El primer track ya está firmado. Los otros dos están a la espera de formar parte del próximo EP. ¡Estoy impaciente por compartirlas con mis fans!
WS: Artists are always on the making; do you have forthcoming projects on the way?
NB: Of course, I have 🙂 Right now, I’m focused on the Hard Techno genre. I like how this genre has evolved, that’s why I decided to go deeper into it. I’ve finished three tracks already. The first Track is already signed. The two others are waiting to be a part of the upcoming EP. Can’t wait to share them with my fans!
