El dúo formado por las leyendas Audio y Ed Rush responden a nuestras preguntas varios días antes de lanzar ‘Divine Profits‘, su segundo álbum conjunto
Hace ya dos temporadas pudimos charlar con la leyenda del drum and bass Audio en su paso por Sala Cosmos. Casi tres años después, volvemos a hablar con él y con su compañero Ed Rush, mítico productor de los sonidos más oscuros y duros del drum and bass con motivo del lanzamiento de ‘Divine Profits‘, segundo álbum de estudio como su formación conjunta Killbox. Hemos estado recibiendo adelantos de este álbum y este viernes lo podremos disfrutar al completo.
Audio y Ed Rush responderán sobre el confinamiento, el estado actual de drum and bass, los diferentes estilos y hacia dónde se dirige el género, entre otras cosas.
Wololo Sound: Vais a lanzar ‘Divine Profits’ este viernes, el segundo álbum bajo vuestro alias Killbox. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de producción para este? ¿Qué es lo que más os ha gustado del resultado final?
Audio: ¡Creo que lo que más le gusta a la gente de los últimos pasos de un álbum es que has terminado un LP! Es una gran tarea y completarlo siempre te hace sentir increíble, algo de lo que estar orgulloso.
Wololo Sound: You will release ‘Divine Profits’ this Friday, the second album under your duo alias Killbox. How has the production process been for this one? What is your favourite thing about the final result?
Audio: I think the favourite thing about the final stages of an album for most people is that you have finished an LP! It’s such a big undertaking, so to complete it always feels amazing, something to be proud of.
Wololo Sound: El neurofunk y el techstep son los núcleos principales de este nuevo LP. ¿Cómo véis estos géneros en la escena ahora mismo?
Ed Rush: Es difícil juzgar el estado de cualquier escena ahora mismo por el COVID, pero siempre ha habido un seguimiento muy positivo de los estilos más duros del drum and bass aunque esto siempre puede variar dependiendo de la localización. Los estilos siempre están cambiando dentro de la escena, lo cual lo mantiene interesante, y es una parte integral de los valores del progreso que la escena drum and bass abarca.
WS: Neurofunk and techstep are the main core of this new LP. How do you think these genres are doing within the scene right now?
Ed Rush: It’s quite hard to judge the state of any meta scenes at the moment because of covid but there has always been a healthy following for the harder styles of dnb although this can vary by location. Styles are always shifting within the scene which keeps it interesting and is an integral part of the forward thinking ethos that the dnb scene embraces.
Wololo Sound: Después del esperado lanzamiento de este nuevo álbum, ¿hay algo en lo que estéis trabajando o vais a tomaros un respiro de producir?
Audio: ¡Nunca paro de producir jaja! He terminado un álbum en solitario que comencé justo cuando se estableció el confinamiento, y muchos remixes que tengo listos, ¡tan solo necesito que abran los clubes para poder ir de fiesta!
WS: After the long-awaited release of this new album, is there anything you are working on now or are you taking a little break from producing?
Audio: I never stop producing haha, I’ve finished a solo album that I started just as lockdown came into effect, and have many remix’s that are ready to go, just need those clubs open so we can party!!!!
Wololo Sound: Por separado, ambos sois veteranos de la escena drum and bass. ¿Cuándo y cómo decidísteis unir fuerzas para este proyecto?
Ed Rush: Siempre hemos sentido un respeto mutuo por el trabajo del otro pero fue en la fiesta de regreso de Bad Company en Fabric, en Londres, en 2016 en la que pinchamos un set en b2b bastante largo cuando surgió la idea. Pasamos un rato tan bueno que decidimos hacer música juntos y a partir de ahí nació Killbox.
WS: Separately, you are both two veterans of the drum and bass scene. When and how did you decide to join forces for this project?
Ed Rush: We have always had a mutual respect for each other’s work but it was at the Bad Company come back party at Fabric in London in 2016 where we played a long b2b set that the idea came. We had such a laugh we decided to make some music together and from this Killbox was born.
Wololo Sound: Hablemos de la escena drum and bass. ¿Qué ha evolucionado desde vuestros primeros años produciendo y pinchando hasta ahora?
Audio: Internet, ese es el mayor cambio desde que empecé en la escena, ha llevado el drum and bass a todo el mundo y ha abierto una escena que antes era muy hermética al resto del mundo. Lo cual tiene sus puntos positivos y negativos.
WS: Let’s talk about the drum and bass scene. What has evolved since your first years producing and DJing until now?
Audio: The internet – that’s the biggest thing that’s evolved since I first came into the scene, it’s opened the whole world to dnb and has opened a once quite closed off scene to the rest of the world. Which comes with its positives and negatives.
Wololo Sound: ¿Cuál creéis que será la gran moda dentro del drum and bass en 2021? ¿Sonidos más oscuros? ¿Sonidos melódicos? ¿Quizás algo más técnico?
Ed Rush: Creo que veremos más espacio en el drum and bass que está por venir. El lado más oscuro, duro y técnico del drum and bass o del neuro o como quieras llamarlo no podría haber continuado sin volverse más loco aún y más lleno. El espacio o el silencio en una composición son igual de importantes que los propios sonidos y ambos tienen un tira y afloja, uno no puede existir sin el otro. Ahora es el momento de un poco más de espacio para dejar a la música respirar.
WS: What do you think that will be the big trend within drum and bass in 2021? Darker sounds? Melodic sounds? Perhaps something more technical?
Ed Rush: I think we will see more space in the new dnb moving forward. The harder, darker and more technical side of dnb or neuro or whatever you want to call it couldn’t have continued getting more crazy and much more full. Space or silence in a composition is just as important as the actual sound itself and the two play a continuous tug of war but, one can’t exist without the other. Now is the time for just a bit more space to let the music breathe.
Wololo Sound: Ambos habéis venido a España en varias ocasiones para diferentes eventos y salas. ¿Cómo véis la escena aquí? ¿Qué destacáis de las veces que habéis pinchado en nuestro país?
Audio: He tenido la suerte de venir a España para muchos eventos a lo largo de los años, he estado de fiesta en muchas ciudades y el ambiente es muy pegadizo y se contagia en todas partes. España es seriamente uno de mis lugares favoritos para una rave. El entusiasmo por el drum and bass es increíble.
WS: Both of you have come to Spain several times for many different events and venues. How do you see the scene here? What can you highlight from the times you have played in our country?
Audio: I’ve been lucky enough to have come to Spain for many events over the years, I’ve partied in many cities and the vibes and energy is infectious everywhere. Spain seriously is one of my favourite places to rave. the enthusiasm for dnb is amazing.
Wololo Sound: ¿Qué artistas o géneros habéis descubierto recientemente y os encantaría recomendar a vuestros fans y a nuestros lectores?
Audio: Ambos somos bastante fanáticos del hip hop y disfrutamos distintos tipos de música. Mi descubrimiento reciente favorito es el productor Monte Booker (aunque lleva en esto bastante tiempo). Me encanta su estilo deshilvanado.
WS: What artists or genres have you discovered recently and would love to recommend to all of your fans and to our readers?
Ed Rush: We are both huge hip hop fans and enjoy all different types of music. My favourite most recent discovery is producer Monte Booker (although he’s been around for quite a bit). I love his disjointed style.
Wololo Sound: Por último y no menos importante, ¿cómo os ha afectado y ayudado la pandemia? ¿Habéis pensando en alguna forma de crear contenido sin tener fiestas?
Audio: Como dije antes, he terminado de escribir un álbum durante el confinamiento y lo encontré muy liberador, siento que es mi mejor trabajo hasta la fecha, por lo que tengo muchas ganas de ver qué piensa la gente de él. El confinamiento también ha ayudado a mi salud mental y física, casi a empezar de cero, ¡me siento fresco y lleno de energía!
WS: Last but not least, how has the pandemic affected and helped you? Have you thought about any way of creating content without having any gigs?
Audio: Like I said before I’ve completed writing an album in lockdown, and I found it very freeing, I feel it’s my best work to date, so I’m very excited to see what everyone thinks of it. The lockdown also helped my mental and physical health – almost reset myself, I feel very refreshed and full of beans!!!
