La música bass ha dado un gran paso adelante de hace un par de años hacia aquí, sobretodo en el viejo continente, el cuál siempre se ha caracterizado por el buen gusto por ritmos más lineales e incluso underground. Es por tanto al otro lado del charco donde se ha generado una tendencia, enormemente positiva acerca de este estilo, con grandes estandartes como Diplo, Skrillex o Porter Robinson, y sellos como OWSLA, Mad Decent o Monstercat.
Hoy precisamente tenemos el placer de anunciaros una nueva entrevista con uno de los artistas referentes y habituales de Monstercat, sello canadiense con gran tirón en nuestros días. Unlike Pluto nos sorprende con una entrevista muy informal, y donde nos habla sobre sus inicios, Tomorrowland, la escena americana, jazz, y mucho más… Además de alguna que otra exclusiva. Con todos ustedes, Unlike Pluto:
WS: En primer lugar muchas gracias por contestar a nuestras preguntas Armond. Comenzamos con una pregunta obligada, ¿Por que ‘Unlike Pluto‘? Hemos leído que es en referencia al planeta… ¿Como surgió esta idea?
Unlike Pluto: Era un novato en la universidad, tenía algunos temas de electrónica por sacar, y fue cuando Soundcloud salió a la luz. Rápidamente se me ocurrió el nombre. Fue fácil porque Plutón siempre fue mi planeta favorito cuando crecí. Inicialmente era un juego de palabras para conseguir un like en Facebook, pero se convirtió en “Unlike Pluto, I exist” (“Al contrario que Plutón (Unlike Pluto), yo existo”. Depende de cómo lo mires, supongo.
WS: First of all, thank you for answering our questions Armond. We have to start with a must question: Why ‘Unlike Pluto’? We have read it is a reference to the dwarf planet… How did you come up with it?
Unlike Pluto: I was a freshman in college, had a few electronic tracks to put out, this is when Soundcloud first came out – so I quickly came up with the name. It was an easy one b/c Pluto was ALWAYS my favorite planet growing up. Initially it was a play on a Facebook like, but it turned into “Unlike Pluto, I exist”. Depends on how you look at it I guess.
WS: Entramos en materia. Te hemos visto estos meses realizar una gran gira por Norteamerica… ¿Tienes planeado realizar algún tipo de Tour en Europa algún día?
Unlike Pluto: ¡Definitivamente está en mi lista de cosas por hacer! Un tour por Europa y por Asia sería increíble, ¡haré todo lo que esté en mi mano para que ocurra!
WS: Lets get into it. We have seen you these months in a big tour around the USA. Do you plan on going on a tour around Europe someday?
Unlike Pluto: Definitely on my to-do list! A European & Asia tour would be amazing, and will do everything in my power to make that happen!!
WS: Donde si te veremos es en Tomorrowland (Bélgica). ¿Que esperas de este show? ¿Opinas, como mucha gente en Europa, que Tomorrowland es el mejor festival del mundo?
Unlike Pluto: ¡Creo que Tomorrowland será genial! Nunca he estado, solo he oído grandes cosas de este festival. No sé si hay un “mejor” festival del mundo, ya que hay tantos y tan diferentes, en realidad depende de la persona, y de lo que quieran y buscan en un festival.
WS: We will see you in Tomorrowland (Belgium). What do you expect of this show? Do you think, like a lot of people in Europe, that it is the best festival of the world?
Unlike Pluto: I think Tomorrowland will be awesome! I have never been, only heard great things about this festival. I don’t know if there is a “Best” festival now, since there are so many that are vastly different – it really depends on the person, and what they want from a festival.
WS: Si hablamos de Unlike Pluto hablamos inmediatamente de Monstercat, sello al que sin duda estás fuertemente ligado. ¿Que nos puedes decir de la “familia Monstercat? ¿Como empezó tu idilio con este label?
Unlike Pluto: ¡La familia de Monstercat es super cercana y amigable! Una vez que formas parte de su equipo, te tratan como a una familia, es lo más. Mi relación comenzó de hecho hace unos cuatro años cuando estaba en la universidad estudiando para un examen de microbiología, ¡justó ahí les envié mis demos! Mi primer lanzamiento con ellos fue ‘Waiting For You’ con Joanna Jones, y desde ahí los siento como un gran hogar para la música.
WS: Whenever we talk about Unlike Pluto we immediately relate it with Monstercat, label that you are clearly close to. What can you tell us about the “Monstercat family”? How did your relationship with the label begin?
Unlike Pluto: The Monstercat family is SUPER close and friendly! Once you are a part of their team, they treat you like family, it’s the greatest thing ever. My relationship actually began around 4 years ago when I was in college studying for a micro bio exam – I emailed them my demos at the time haha!! My first release with them was “Waiting for you” feat. Joanna Jones, from there they felt like a great home for the music.
WS: San Holo, Pegboard Nerds, Conro, Seven Lions… En Tomorrowland estarás rodeado de grandes amigos. ¿Alguna relación de especial amistad con algún artista?
Unlike Pluto: ¡Sí, son todos gente estupenda! De hecho estuve en un tour bus con Seven Lions y Pegboards Nerds no hace mucho, son literalmente familia, tenemos bastantes anécdotas locas. Lo que me gusta de la escena de la música electrónica es que TODO EL MUNDO es amigable, todavía no he conocido a un artista engreído, ¡Todos nos ayudamos en lugar de ser competitivos!
WS: San Holo, Pegboard Nerds, Conro, Seven Lions… You will be surrounded by big names. Do you have any special friendship with any artist?
Unlike Pluto: Yeah man they are all amazing guys! I was actually on a bus tour with Seven Lions & Pegboard nerds not to long ago, they are literally family, we have some crazy stories haha. What I like about the electronic music scene, is that EVERYONE is friendly, I still haven’t met a mean artist – we all support each other instead of being competitive!
WS: Te hemos visto producir varios estilos de música diferente, y rara vez siguiendo un guión o tendencia marcada. ¿Que opinas del último movimiento hacia el ‘Future Bass’ o dance-pop? ¿Crees que hoy en día el artista está muy condicionado por la corriente o “moda” del momento?
Unlike Pluto: Para mí es difícil decirlo, ¡sinceramente no sé lo que nunca lo que se lleva! La verdad es que los temas de future bass se llevan muchas reproducciones online, así que un montón de nuevos artistas ven eso y sacan partido de ello, a veces saturando el sonido hasta un punto de no retorno. Creo que los nuevos artistas deberían hacer lo que les inspire, pero no caer de lleno en lo que la “industria” quiere. Cuando haces algo completamente diferente, algunos estarán como “¿Qué coño…?” mientras que otros dirán “¡Tío, eso es increíble!”. La gente de mi generación está terriblemente asustada de ser rechazados, denegados, exiliados. También somos muy impacientes, así que hacer temas de future bass te dará reproducciones en el ahora, ¿pero te las dará dentro de un año? Podría despotricar de esto durante horas, pero al fin y al cabo, tan solo es una opinión.
WS: We have seen you producing in different styles of music, and rarely following any trend. What do you think about the future bass or dance-pop movement that is taking the mainstream scene nowadays? Do you think the artist of today is very influenced by the trends of the moment?
Unlike Pluto: It’s tough for me to say, I honestly don’t know what’s going on ever haha! Well future bass tracks are definitely getting the plays online, so a bunch of new artists will see that and take advantage, eventually saturating the sound to the point of NO return. I think new artists should definitely make what inspires them, but not completely fall into what the “industry” wants. When you make something completely different, some people are gonna be like “What the fuck??”, and some people are gonna be like “Dude this is incredible!””. People from my generation are DEATHLY afraid of being turned down, rejected, exiled. We are also impatient as hell, so making a future bass track will definitely get you plays now, but will it in a year?? I can rant for hours on this, but at the end of the day, it’s just an opinion.
WS: Hablemos de futuro. Hace ya más de cuatro años de tu álbum debut… ¿Entra en tus planes un nuevo LP a corto/medio plazo? ¿Algún release de los próximos meses del que nos puedas adelantar algo?
Unlike Pluto: ¡¡¡¡¡100%!!!!! He estado muy centrado en mi guitarra acústica y haciendo canciones con mi voz durante el año pasado. Después de probar cómo reacciona la gente a mi voz con ‘Worst In Me’, definitivamente quiero ir en esa dirección con mi música. Mi plan es terminar todos estos temas y sacar un EP o bien un álbum a finales de año
WS: Lets talk about the future. It has been more than four years since your debut album. Are you considering about releasing a new LP in a short/long term? Any release in the following months that you could tell us about?
Unlike Pluto: 100%!!!!! I have been literally hitting my head on my acoustic guitar, making songs with my voice for the past year. After testing how people will react to my voice with “Worst In Me”, I definitely want to head in that direction with my music. My plan is to finish up all these tracks, and release either an EP or album later this year 🙂
WS: En algunos de tus últimos lanzamientos hemos visto ciertas influencias de R&B y Jazz. ¿Como llegaste a este sonido tan característico?
Unlike Pluto: Sinceramente la fase de jazz fue el año pasado, estaba obsesionado con conseguir vinilos antiguos de jazz de los 50 y 60 y samplear cosas, ¡me encantaba! Se reflejaba por completo en los temas que estaba haciendo, pero mucho de ello tenía que ver con los cantantes de los que me rodeaba, eran todos cantantes de jazz increíbles con muy buenas tonalidades. El sonido salió totalmente por accidente, ¡realmente no sabía que estaba haciendo! Personalmente creo que cuando alguien crea música, no deberían pensar demasiado, solo dejar que todo salga de dentro.
WS: In some of your latest releases we have seen certain R&B and Jazz influences. How did you come up with this unique sound?
Unlike Pluto: Honestly the jazz phase was last year, I was obsessed with getting old 50’s & 60’s jazz vinyls and sampling shit – I lived for it! It definitely reflected on the records I was making, but a lot of it had to do with the singers I was surrounded by, they were all incredible jazz singers with a great tones. The sound was totally on accident, didn’t really know what I was doing haha! I personally believe when someone creates music, they shouldn’t think too much, just let that shit fly pour out of your body.

– ¿Un hobby? ¡Samplear discos! Literalmente lo que más me ha gustado hacer
siempre. También quiero probar a hacer velas perfumadas, estoy extrañamente
obsesionado con eso.

– A club / festival to play in? There is a ton, but I love echostage in DC, and exchange & create in LA.

– A hobby? Sampling records! Literally my favorite thing ever. I also want to get into making scented candles, I’m weirdly obsessed.
