Hi Sander, first of all thank you very much for attending our media, Wololo Sound. Let’s start asking you for our country, Spain. The bass scene is growing here, but slowly. Would you like to act in Spain soon? Any club or festival you know and where you’d like to play?
For sure! I played in Barcelona once about two years ago , but would definitely like to come back to Spain. I recently played in Portugal so hopefully Spain is next!
Although you are Dutch, we usually see you around the USA. Do you prefer the American or the European scene? Many artists have told us that they have to change their sets almost completely depending on the continent they are playing. Is the audience so different?
I don’t prefer one or the other, but both are completely different. People in the States go crazier than in Europe I think. But again, both are great!
Where do you think the European scene is going right now? What styles do you think that will become “mainstream” some months after future bass?
I think the (future) bass scene is catching on now in Europe as to where it’s been around in the US for quite some time now. That’s not to say that there aren’t acts in Europe right now pushing boundaries with really good music but they’re harder to find!
A question you have probably been asked more than once: you have your own style, you own sound inside future bass. Can we expect the first San Holo album soon?
At the moment I’m still in a singles state of mind, an album is definitely on the horizon for the future but i’m not sure when just yet 🙂
Tell us about your label: although it is a relatively young label it has discovered or exposed apparently unknown artists. How do you plan the music you search or release from bitbird and what part do you take in the process? How do you see your label in 5 years?
Bitbird is about breaking boundaries and finding music that touches our hearts – whether that be classical piano or future bass it doesn’t matter to us. We don’t necessarily believe in genres, but in great music. We get a lot of demo’s sent to us but we also stumble upon songs and artists on Soundcloud all of the time. We don’t care about how many followers an artist has. If the music’s good, we’ll release it period! For example, we found Taska Black when he literally had 4 followers on Soundcloud. Our goal is to keep pushing these boundaries and promote music that we feel deserves to be heard.
A short time ago you premiered ‘The Future’, and we have been told the story there is behind the first contact with the singer James Vincent McMorrow. What made that the collaboration was so special?
Me and James both think the same way about music even though we make completely different styles of music. We just clicked from the start and I think that’s what really made this track work. It all happened very naturally. I’ve been a fan of James’ music for a long time now and working with him on ‘The Future’ was an absolute honor.
‘Lights’ has been your most record-breaking single. Has it been a before and after in your career? Curiously ‘Lights’ came out as a free download. Was it because you didn’t believe the track would be such a success or it was another thing? Do you think artists should give away more music for their fans?
It has definitely changed. I would have never thought it would get this big. I’m getting played on national radio now, even in Holland, so yeah that’s definitely new for me. I have always given my music out as a free download and that’s how we operate at bitbird. It’s just the way it should be I think.
Voting for DJMag Top100 has been opened. What do you think about this list? Do you believe in it? Would you like to be in it or you are not worried about it? What do you think of those “big marketing campaigns” that some artists make to increase their position at the list?
It would be an absolute honor of course to get on the list but it’s not really my focus. I want to be known for my music and my productions and building a platform for other artists that I love and not necessarily for my DJing!
