Si has escuchado future house alguna vez conocerás a Mike Williams, sin duda uno de los iconos a día de hoy de este tipo de música, conocido por sus grandes éxitos publicados en grandes sellos de la industria. Uno de los pupilos del gran Tiësto, un artista con una gran cola de sellos en los que su música ha visto la luz, como Spinnin‘, Musical Freedom, Revealed, Cyberpvnk o R3hab music. Sin duda uno de los nombres propios de la industria mainstream y un sonido propio que no para de dar la vuelta al mundo. Con todos ustedes Mike Williams que ha venido a Wololo Sound a contarnos un poquito más de el.
Wololo Sound: ¡Hola Mike! Es un verdadero placer hablar contigo, así que ¡bienvenido y gracias por estar aquí! Empecemos, por supuesto, con tu carrera. Casi una década haciendo música, ¿cómo estás y cómo te sientes haciendo música?
Mike Williams: ¡Hola! ¡Gracias! ¡Me siento bien! Hemos tenido un año increíble hasta ahora, un montón de conciertos y hemos hecho un montón de música nueva y esta lista para ser lanzada. Es increíble ver cómo todo el mundo vuelve a la normalidad después de tantos años difíciles.
Wololo Sound: Hi Mike! It’s a real pleasure to talk with you, so welcome and thanks for being here! Let’s start, of course, with your career. Almost a decade making music, how are you and how do you feel about make music?
Mike Williams: Hey! Thank you! I feel good! We had an amazing year so far, lots of shows and made a lot of new music ready to be released. It’s amazing to see the whole world coming back to normal after some difficult years.
Wololo Sound: Hemos podido leer algunas cosas sobre ti, y una de las más interesantes es tu habilidad con el piano a la edad de seis años, la pregunta es, ¿a qué edad descubrió Mike Williams la música electrónica?
Mike Williams: ¡Cierto! Siempre me ha gustado tocar el piano y crear melodías. Cuando tenía unos 11 o 12 años descubrí la música dance.
Wololo Sound: We could read some things about you, and one of the most interesting is your piano skills at the age of six, the question is, at what age did mike williams discover electronic music?
Mike Williams: True! I always loved playing piano and making melodies. When I was around 11 or 12 I discovered dance music.
Wololo Sound: Ha hecho falta mucho trabajo, sacrificio y talento para ver triunfar al Mike Williams de hoy. ¿Cómo empezó tu pasión por la música y cuáles fueron las mayores inspiraciones de Mike Williams?
Mike Williams: Hardwell, Avicii y Tiesto se estaban haciendo muy famosos en aquella época y mi padre siempre escuchaba dance/disco en el coche. Veía vídeos en internet de otros dj’s mostrando sus habilidades y eso me enganchó enseguida. Poco a poco me fui introduciendo en la industria pinchando en pequeños espectáculos y fiestas.
Wololo Sound: It has taken a lot of hard work, sacrifice and talent to see the Mike Williams of today succeed. How did your passion for music begin and what were the biggest inspirations Mike Williams?
Mike Williams: Hardwell, Avicii and Tiesto were becoming super big at the time and my dad always listened to dance/disco in his car. I watched videos of other dj’s showing their skills online and that got me hooked right away! Slowly I moved myself into the industry by playing small shows and parties.
Wololo Sound: De Soundcloud a la cima, ¿Cómo es el cambio?
Mike Williams: Hay un gran cambio. Se ha convertido en algo mucho más serio y grande. Un equipo más grande, más gente con la que tratar, presión, estrés. Pero también mucha diversión y posibilidades. Aunque a veces es divertido recordar la época en la que Soundcloud era la plataforma más importante para destacar.
Wololo Sound: From soundcloud to the top, how is the change?
Mike Williams: There’s a big change. It became so much more serious and bigger. A bigger team, more people to deal with, pressure, stress. But also a lot of fun and possibilities. But sometimes it’s fun to think back about the time Soundcloud was the most important platform to stand out.
Wololo Sound: Obviamente tu sonido está en continuo cambio pero, ¿es posible volver a ver a Mike Williams haciendo Future House puro?
Mike Williams: Estoy probando cosas nuevas todos los días, a veces funciona, a veces no. El Future House siempre ha estado ahí para mí, pero me gustaría verlo más grande; todo se reduce a música house enérgica, melódica y groovy y hay muchas maneras diferentes de producirla. Veamos hacia dónde va.
Wololo Sound: Obviously your sound is in a continuous change but is it possible to see Mike Williams doing pure Future House back again?
Mike Williams: I’m trying new stuff everyday, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Future House has always been there for me, but I’d like to see it bigger; it all comes down to energetic, melodic, groovy house music and there’s lots of different ways to produce it. Let’s see where it goes!
Wololo Sound: La mayoría de la gente quizá no sepa nada de tu divertido pero interesante proyecto Mike On The Mic, ¿puedes explicarnos algo al respecto?
Mike Williams: Empezó como una broma en un vídeo de aftermovie de Miami, pero a mucha gente le gustó el estilo y lo incómodo del vídeo. Así que ya teníamos este formato en mente desde hace tiempo. Es muy divertido hablar con la gente del público y ver cómo son realmente, divertirse un poco aparte de estar sólo en el escenario.
Wololo Sound: Most of the people maybe don’t know anything about your funny but interesting project Mike On The Mic, can you explain something about it?
Mike Williams: It started as a joke in one aftermovie video of Miami, but a lot of people liked the style and the awkwardness about the video. So we already had this format in mind for a while. It’s so much fun to talk to people in the crowd and see how they really are, have some fun besides only being on stage.
Wololo Sound: Fuera del house, ¿tienes algún otro género de música electrónica que te produzca interés, por ejemplo drum and bass o dubstep?
Mike Williams: Me encanta el drum and bass, el dubstep, también el techno profundo y agresivo con sonidos más oscuros.
Wololo Sound: Out of house, do you have another electronic music genre which it produces interest on you, for example drum and bass or dubstep?
Mike Williams: I love drum and bass, dubstep but also the deep aggressive techno with more darker sounds!
Wololo Sound: Quizá sea una pregunta genérica, pero, ¿qué piensa Mike Williams de la industria EDM?
Mike Williams: Me gusta, es grande y muy amplia. Hay muchos grandes artistas y sigue evolucionando. Las redes sociales son un factor creciente y se han vuelto muy importantes, pero espero que sigamos buscando artistas de calidad y talento en lugar de reyes de las redes sociales.
Wololo Sound: Maybe it is a generic question, but, what does Mike Williams think about the EDM industry?
Mike Williams: I like it, it’s big and goes pretty wide. There’re so many great artists and it keeps evolving. Social media is a growing factor and became very important but I hope we keep searching for quality and talented artists instead of social media kings.
Wololo Sound: Estamos viendo como el techno está ahora en la cima de los géneros en Europa, ¿Crees que la música electrónica es un ciclo? ¿Que un estilo tiene éxito o es mainstream hoy, pero otro diferente lo será mañana y todo es como una rueda?
Mike Williams: Sin duda es un ciclo. Los estilos vuelven todo el tiempo, si nos fijamos en el pasado. Quizá no exactamente de la misma manera, pero es una rueda que sigue girando.
Wololo Sound: We are seeing how techno is now on the top of genres in Europe, Do you think electronic music is a cycle? That a style is successful or mainstream today, but a different one will be tomorrow and everything is like a wheel?
Mike Williams: It’s definitely a cycle. Styles come back all the time if you look in the past. Maybe not exactly the same way but it’s a wheel that keeps turning.
