Sin duda es uno de los hombres del momento. El pasado 1 de junio ha lanzado su primer álbum de estudio llamado ‘Biomorph’ por uno de los mejores sellos del mundo, Drumcode. Ahora, a dos días de su visita a Barcelona para pinchar en el evento de Drumcode durante la Off Week… ¡entrevistamos a Enrico Sangiuliano!

Wololo Sound: Al principio, a pesar de ser conocido en Italia, necesitaste tu tiempo para que tu carrera internacional despegara pero, una vez que lo conseguiste, te has mantenido entre los mejores desde aquella. ¿Crees que el hecho de estar luchando tantos años para triunfar te hizo estar más preparado para lo que venía en comparación con alguien que consiguiera la fama muy joven o rápidamente?
Enrico Sangiuliano: No pienso que sea alguien famoso o algo así, sería una tontería que lo pensara. Simplemente hago la música que amo y estoy muy agradecido que todo el mundo me apoye desde el día 1. Principalmente pinchaba en raves antes de que ningún sello me firmara así que creo que eso me ayudó a estar preparado a pinchar en mis bolos cuando el tiempo llegara pero aún así me sigo poniendo muy ansioso cuando pincho delante del público hasta que me concentro en la sesión un poco.
Wololo Sound: Starting from the beginning, despite being well known in Italy, it took some time for your international career to take off, but once it did, you’ve been sitting at the top from the start. Do you think fighting for many years to succeed made you more prepared for what was to come, rather than someone who achieved fame very young or quickly?
Enrico Sangiuliano: I don’t think really think of myself as famous or anything like that. It’s weird if I did, I just make music that I love, and I am thankful that everyone has been supporting it from day 1. I was mainly playing at raves for a long time before anything got signed, so I guess it helped me prepare to play gigs when the time came. But it still makes me really anxious when I play in front of any crowd, until I get into the groove a bit.
Wololo Sound: Drumcode es uno de los mejores sellos del mundo y tu eres una de las piezas claves de esta familia. ¿Cuales son las ventajas de lanzar tus producciones en Drumcode en vez de en otro sello?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Por supuesto, Drumcode es uno de los sellos de techno más importantes y tienen una gran historia y equipo detrás. Pinchar en sus eventos es una ventaja porque siempre están en las mejores salas del mundo y estoy muy feliz de formar parte de las fiestas del sello y del primer Drumcode Festival este año. El equipo entero genera muy buen ambiente y que todos sean muy profesionales ayudan a crear un ambiente que inspira a crear buena música.

Wololo Sound: One of the best labels in the world, Drumcode – you are a key family member. What are the advantages of releasing your music with Drumcode instead of another label?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Of course, Drumcode is one of the biggest techno labels, and they have an amazing team behind them and a history. Playing the events is an advantage for sure, as they are always at the best venues in the world and I am happy to be a part of their label branded shows and the first Drumcode Festival this year. The whole team really generates a special family vibe, and the professionalism of everyone they have onboard helps to create an environment which inspires good music.
Wololo Sound: Tu nuevo álbum, ‘Biomorph’, fue lanzado el 1 de junio. ¿Puedes contarnos como vino la idea de lanzar un álbum completo en Drumcode? ¿Fue idea tuya? ¿Cuánto tiempo te llevó producir el álbum completo?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Empecé haciendo algunas canciones que mandé a Adam Beyer para mi próximo lanzamiento y al final tenía una buena colección. El las escuchó y me preguntó: ¿Quieres hacer un álbum?. Dije que sí, por supuesto. Sentí que esas canciones eran parte de un concepto y no sería correcto lanzarlas y luego añadir EP’s individuales porque necesitaban ser escuchados en un orden específico para tener efecto.
Wololo Sound: Your new album ‘Biomorph’ was releases on the 1st June. Can you tell us a little how you came about with an option to release a full album on Drumcode, was this your idea? How long did it take to produce the whole album?
Enrico Sangiuliano: I started to make a few tracks which I sent to Adam for my next release, and I had quite a collection in the end, which he listened to and said ‘Do you want to make an album?’. Of course, I said yes!! I felt these tracks were all part of the concept and wouldn’t have been right to release them ad individual EP’s. They need to be listened together in a specific order to have the full effect.
Wololo Sound: Tu álbum se podría decir que es más que música ya que cuenta una historia que tiene un concepto detallado. ¿Puedes contarnos algo más sobre porque escogiste ‘la evolución’ como el concepto de este álbum? ¿Es algo importante para ti este concepto?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Sí, es muy importante para mi. Estoy muy interesado en la naturaleza, el mundo, la tecnología y como eso afecta a nuestro día a día a todos nosotros. Estoy estudiando y analizando la evolución del patrón y como esto cambia al mismo tiempo que evoluciona. La tecnología y los avances evolutivos cambian constantemente, sin embargo, aún hay un viaje o camino similar que puede tener diferentes resultados. Eso es lo que quise representar con mi álbum.
Wololo Sound: Its more than music, the LP tells a story and had a detailed concept. Can you tell us a little more about why you chose ‘evolution’ as the concept, is this something that it important to you?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Yes, it’s very important to me. I am really interested in nature, the world, technology and how it effects everyday life for all of us. I actually studied and analysed the evolution of a pattern and how it changes overtime, the same as evolution. Technology and developments in evolution change constantly, yet it all still has a similar path or journey, which can end in different outcomes – this is what I have tried to emulate with the album.

Wololo Sound: El techno melódico es uno de los generos más populares del momento dentro de la industria. ¿Qué géneros o estilos musicales crees que volverán a triunfar en los próximos años?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Siempre he sido un gran fan de la música hardcore desde mis comienzos en las raves en Italy y me gustaría pensar que esto podría volver. Aunque todavía es tan fuerte como lo es ahora, solo tiene su propio seguimiento y el techno el suyo. Si miras los géneros en Beatport ahora mismo, hay demasiados. Cuando empecé había techno, house, trance y hardcore. No creo que haya algo que tenga una tendencia, si buscas y realmente miras a cada uno, verás que todos tienen un gran seguimiento, pero a veces no siempre están tan expuestos a los medios conocidos como el techno. Se que el trance está volviendo, ese sonido típico de rave old school. Creo que podría ser un género al que echarle un ojo.
Wololo Sound: Melodic techno is becoming one of the most popular genres at the moment within the industry. What other genres and styles of music do you see coming back in the next few years?
Enrico Sangiuliano: I have always been a fan of hardcore dance music, since my early days raving in Italy, and would like to think that could make a comeback. Even though, it is still as strong as it is now, it just has its own following and techno has theirs. If you look at the genres on Beatport now, there are so many, when I started out it was house, techno, trance and hardcore. I do not think anything has a specific trend or popularity, if you search and really look into each of them, you’ll see they all have a huge following, but you are not always exposed to them as much as you are techno or the mainstream media. I know trance is really coming back, that rave style old school sound, I think that could be one to keep an eye on.
Wololo Sound: Este fin de semana pinchas en Barcelona en la fiesta de la Off Week de Drumcode en Poble Espanyol. Pinchas en España regularmente y tenemos un montón de seguidores de techno, ¿tienes alguna discoteca o festival favorito aquí?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Pincho regularmente en España y he tenidos algunos shows buenos realmente locos. El público en España es muy educado y conocen todos los DJs y canciones que pinchas. Por supuesto, pinchar en Poble Espanyol la semana que viene durante el Sonar será divertido. Es un lugar fantástico y es muy guay pinchar con tantos amigos también. Recientemente he pinchado en Indrustria Copera con Drumcode, Club4 y Fabrik en Madrid. Son todos muy buenos y la verdad tenéis muy buenos clubes para escoger alguno.
Wololo Sound: This weekend you play in Barcelona, for the Drumcode OFF Sonar party at Poble Espanyol. You play in Spain regularly, and we have a lot of techno fans here, have you some favourite venues and festivals?
Enrico Sangiuliano: I play often in Spain and have had some crazy good shows! The crowd in Spain is very well educated and they know their DJ’s and all the tracks you play. Of course, playing Poble Espanyol will be fun next week at Sonar, It’s such a cool space and its nice to play with so many friends too. I have also played recently at Industrial Copera with Drumcode, Club4 and Fabrik in Madrid! They are all such good clubs, you guys have a lot to choose from.

Wololo Sound: Tu álbum ya ha salido, ¿Qué es lo siguiente que vas a hacer despues de terminar un proyecto tan grande? ¿Harás un tour con motivo del álbum?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Si, acabo de anunciar un tour del álbum en mi página de Facebook que empezó el fin de semana pasado en Reino Unido y me llevará a Barcelona en el Sonar y a Sudamérica a finales de mes con un montón de fechas por el medio incluido Awakenings y Junction 2 en Londres.
Wololo Sound: So, the LP is out, what’s next for you after such a big project is finished? Will you be doing an album tour?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Yes, we have an album tour which I just announced on my Facebook page actually, which started last weekend in the UK and then takes me to Barcelona for Sonar and over to South America at the end of the month, with loads of insane gigs in-between, including Awakenings and the mega Junction 2 in London.
