¿Algún fan de Lost Frequencies en la sala? Como bien sabréis, 2019 y 2020 han sido dos de los mejores años en la carrera musical del artista belga, publicando dos álbumes –‘Alive And Feeling Fine’ y ‘Cup Of Beats’-, un gran número de originales y remixes con miles de reproducciones, se ha colocado el número 21 del mundo en el Top 100 DJs de la prestigiosa revista DJ Mag y ha protagonizado varias actuaciones espectaculares, como la del Royal Palace o la del Atomium, ambas en Bruselas, su ciudad natal. Hace apenas unas semanas, conocíamos también el lanzamiento de su nueva marca de ginebra, Ocus Gin, con la que pretende llegar a los paladares más exquisitos.
Pues bien, con motivo de su actuación en la edición digital de Tomorrowland esta nochevieja, el carismático artista ha ofrecido una entrevista al famoso festival belga, a la que hemos podido acceder de manera exclusiva en nuestro país. En ella, Felix habla sobre todo lo que rodea a este show, así como de un buen número de curiosidades y datos sobre su carrera musical que seguro que muchos desconocéis. Podéis leer esta entrevista a continuación.
Tomorrowland: ¿Qué podemos esperar en tu set en Tomorrowland?
Lost Frequencies: Siempre trato de pinchar música que he producido, pero esta vez voy a cambiar un poco para hacerlo diferente. Voy a pinchar, principalmente, la música que me gusta y que he encontrado en los últimos meses -o quizá incluso tracks antiguos de mi álbum anterior. ¡Seguro que seguirá siendo muy melódico! Ya sabes, es raro para mí ahora crear un setlist porque cada vez que hice un DJ set en los últimos seis, siete meses, fue online. Y eso significa que mi tracklist está un poco quemado. Y no quiero poner los mismos temas una y otra vez. Así que estoy siempre intentando poner nuevo material sobre la mesa. Y esta vez fue como, ¿Qué voy a poner? Porque hice uno la semana pasada o así porque acababa de lanzar mi nueva ginebra. E hicimos uno en Bruselas, y también otro en Tomorrowland. Siempre intento poner solo la música que produzco así que esta vez va a ser más música que me gusta, y que normalmente he encontrado en el último mes, o incluso quizás viejos temas que verdaderamente me gustan y temas de mis álbumes previos. Así lo cambio un poco, así que será un poco diferente. Pero va a seguir siendo muy melódico y techie, será divertido. Sin duda.
Tomorrowland: What can we expect from your show at Tomorrowland?
Lost Frequencies: I always try to play only music that I’ve produced, but this time I’m going to switch it up a bit to make it different. I’m mainly going to play music that I like and that I’ve found in the last months – or maybe even older tracks from my previous album. Definitely still very melodic for sure! You know, it’s weird for me now to create a setlist because every time I did a DJ set the last six, seven months, it went online. And so it means a little bit that my tracklist is kind of burned. And I don’t want to play the same tracks over and over again. So I’m always trying to bring some new stuff to the table. And this time I was like, what am I going to play? Because I did one last week or so because I just launched my new gin. And, we did one in Brussels, and we did one also for Tomorrowland. And I always try to only play the music I produce so this time is going to be more music that I like, and usually that I found in the last month, or even maybe older tracks that I really like and tracks my previous album. So to switch it up a little bit, so it’s going to be maybe a little bit different. But it’s going to stay very melodic and techie, so it’s gonna be fun. For sure.
TML: Un año de lo más extraño llega a su fin. ¿Qué celebrarás esta Nochevieja? ¿Cómo crees que será en esta ocasión una de las noches más especiales del año?
LF: Bueno, voy a celebrar el hecho de que es el final de 2020. Con suerte, 2021 va a traer más bolos y más shows y más compartir momentos que este año. El año pasado, hicimos la Nochevieja en Bali, pinché en la playa. Y había muchos fuegos artificiales allí donde había unas 10.000 personas, fue una fiesta muy grande. Por esto va a ser difícil conseguir este ambiente, pero lo que voy a hacer es simplemente poner un set musical chulo. Así que cuando la gente sea recibida va a poder simplemente pasar un buen rato y celebrarlo y escuchar la música y disfrutar de la transición del 2020 al 2021.
TML: A strange year is coming to an end. What will you celebrate on New Year’s Eve? How do you think one of the most special nights of the year will be this time?
LF: Well, I’m going to celebrate the fact that it’s the end of 2020. Hopefully, 2021 is going to bring more gigs and more shows and more sharing moments than this year. Last year, we did New Year’s Eve in Bali, I played on the beach. And there were so much fireworks there were there was like, I think 10,000 people, it was really a big party. So it’s going to be hard to try to catch this vibe, but what I’m going to do is just try to lay down a cool musical set. So people when is going to be received is going to be able to just have a good time and party and listen to the music and enjoy the transition from 2020 into 2021.
TML: El hecho de celebrar un evento online en Nochevieja es de lo más atrevido, e incluso arriesgado. ¿Cuál crees que es el punto fuerte que lo hará especial y que valga la pena?
LF: Bueno, considero que une a la gente. Porque no están juntos físicamente, pero entonces cuando todos escuchan, viven el mismo evento. Y ellos pueden, creo, comentar e interactuar con lo que está pasando online. Y creo que eso une más cerca a la gente porque estáis experimentando el mismo evento al mismo tiempo, incluso si no estáis en el mismo sitio. De alguna forma no te sientes tan solo. Si se puede hacer eso, supongo.
TML: Holding an online event on New Year’s Eve is the most daring, and even risky. What do you think is the strong point that will make it special and worthwhile?
LF: Well, I think it brings people together. Because they don’t not together physically, but then they all listen, live to the same event. And they can, I think comment and, and interact with what’s happening online. And I think that brings you that brings everybody closer because you’re experiencing the same event at the same time, even though you’re not at the same place. And I think that somehow you don’t feel so much alone. If you can do that I guess.
TML: Grabar en el estudio de Tomorrowland debe ser una experiencia totalmente diferente al estar en el escenario de un festival en vivo. ¿Cómo lo haces para acostumbrarte a pinchar en el estudio vacío?
LF: Intento imaginarme al público delante de mí, lo primero de todo, pero también es duro no ver las cámaras y el gran croma verde. Pero creo que es increíble lo que se ha hecho aquí. En el verano ya fue impresionante. Ahora es otra localización donde se graba. Es otra vez, súper impresionante. Simplemente quiero decirle a la gente que esté viéndolo que el ambiente del backstage es como… es muy parecido al ambiente de Tomorrowland. Normalmente no hay tantos artistas pero el ambiente del backstage… en plan, toda la decoración… es muy tomorrowlandiense. Es súper guay, super bueno.
TML: Recording in the Tomorrowland studio should be a totally different experience from being live on the stage. How do you get used to DJing in the empty studio?
LF: I try to imagine the crowd in front of me, first of all, but then it’s also hard to not see the cameras and to not see the big green key. But I feel like it’s very impressive. what’s been done here. Also for the summer it was it was already impressive. Now it’s another location where you guys film. It’s again, super impressive. I just want to sort of say to the guys watching, the vibe backstage is like, it’s very close to the Tomorrowland vibe, usually where there is not as much artists but the the vibe backstage like all the decor, it’s very Tomorrowland ish. So it’s super cool. super nice.
TML: Sabemos que desde producción os han avisado sobre algunas restricciones a la hora de vestir durante el show. ¿Estás al tanto de esto? ¿Qué tipo de outfit usarás?
LF: Dicen que porque estamos delante de una pantalla verde. Nada de todo negro, ni verde. Nada de todo blanco ni cosas brillantes. Sí. Así que ya lo veremos para los outfits. Tengo algunas camisetas chulas que suelo llevar en los tours, pero no he llevado ni una por un año. Así que los saco. 1, 2, 3, 4 outfits. Voy a escogerlo luego… este es un poco brillante. Ese es el que quiero llevar pero veremos qué dicen. Espero que no sea muy brillante. Así que tengo que comprobarlo con ellos pero tengo cuatro outfits. Debería valer.
TML: We know that production team have warned you about some restrictions regarding dressing during the show. Are you aware of this? What kind of outfit will you wear?
LF: They say because we are standing in front of a green screen. Not all black, no green. Not all white and not shiny stuff. Yes. So we’ll see for outfits. I have some fancy shirts that I usually wear on tour, but I didn’t wear them for one year. So I took them out. 1, 2, 3, 4 outfits. So I’m going to choose later… this one is a little bit shiny. That’s the one I want to I want to wear but we’ll see what they say. Hopefully it’s not too shiny. So I have to check it out with them but I have four outfits. So we should be okay.
TML: ¿Cuál fue tu reacción al enterarte de que este año no habría Tomorrowland?
LF: Mi sentimiento sobre que no haya un Tomorrowland 2020, es que estaba muy, muy decepcionado porque se suponía que iba a pinchar el live show que hicimos el año anterior en el escenario secundario, pero esta vez en el mainstage. Así que iba a ser el primer live show en el mainstage de Tomorrowland. Estaba tan entusiasmado que tenía todo el show listo musicalmente hablando, teníamos los cantantes, los músicos en directo, y a mí también, yo iba a pinchar en directo. Y entonces esto se tuvo que caer. Y realmente iba a ser uno de los momentos más destacados de toda mi vida sin duda. Así que estaba muy disgustado de tener que moverlo, espero que suceda en 2021.
TML: What was your reaction when you found out that this year there would be no Tomorrowland?
LF: My feeling about 2020 no Tomorrowland, I was really, really disappointed because I was supposed to play the live show that we did the year before, on the side stage, but this time on the Mainstage. So it was going to be the first live show on the Mainstage at Tomorrowland. I was super stoked I had the whole show ready music wise, we had the singers, the live musicians, and me too, I was going to play live. And then this had to fall out. And it was really going to be one of my highlights of my whole life for sure. So I was really disappointed to move that, hopefully is going to happen in 2021. For sure.
TML: ¿Cuál fue tu primera impresión al entrar al estudio de grabación?
LF: Bueno, mi primera impresión cuando entré al estudio, por supuesto, es que era muy impresionante. Poque un croma verde tan grande, ya sabes, yo no soy actor. No estoy acostumbrado a este tipo de set, y definitivamente no para un DJ set. Por eso era muy impresionante estar ahí. Fue también un poco intimidante, ya sabes, intentas encajar en el ambiente. Pero esta es la segunda vez así que espero que sea mejor que la primera.
TML: What was your first impression upon entering the recording studio?
LF: Well, my first impression when I walk here in the studio, of course, it’s super impressive. Because a such a big, green key, you know, I’m not an actor. So I’m not really used to these kind of settings, and surely not for a DJ set. So it’s super impressive to be here. It’s also a little bit intimidating, you know, you’re trying to fit into the vibe. But this is the second time so hopefully it will be better than last time.
TML: El evento de Tomorrowland en Nochevieja va a ser algo totalmente innovador en el sector de la música. ¿Crees que puede ser un primer paso para revolucionar la industria?
LF: Cuando la gente está a mi alrededor, decía, “y qué vas a hacer por Año Nuevo”, y estábamos en plan, “no sabemos qué vamos a poder hacer, ya sabes”. Creo que este evento va a cambiar el juego completamente en lo que vais a poder hacer. Y creo que un montón de gente va a poder conectar a través de estos eventos. Incluso si quizás no eres un gran fan de la música electrónica, vas a poder sentirte conectado con mucha gente que está emocionada y hablando de lo que está pasando ahora mismo en el festival y crear esta especia de conexión, y quizá no siendo simplemente una barrera para la gente sino conectando a unas 50.000 personas o incluso muchas más.
TML: Tomorrowland’s event on New Year’s Eve is going to be something totally innovative in the music industry. Do you think it can be a first step to revolutionize the industry?
LF: When people are around me, I was like, so what are you going to do for New Year’s Eve, you know, and we were like, We don’t know what we will be able to do you know. I think this event is going to be a big game changer in what you will be able to do. And I think a lot of people will then be able to connect through these events. Even if you’re not maybe a big fan of electronic music, you will be able to feel connected with a lot of people like being hyped and talking about what’s happening right now on the festival and create this kind of connection and maybe not being just a barrier for people but connected to like 50,000 people or maybe even more.
TML: A pesar de haber sido un año difícil para los artistas y promotores, hemos visto mucha actividad nueva por tu parte. ¿Qué puedes sacar positivo de este 2020?
LF: Bueno, este año no solo fue malo, porque hice un par de cosas de las que me alegro mucho. Primero de todo, finalmente lancé la construcción de mi estudio. Ha sido un sueño para mí montar realmente mi estudio, está casi terminado. Así que estoy emocionado de poder… ya sabes, de finalmente poder producir hasta las 4, 5 de la mañana y no molestar a los vecinos, además estoy teniendo una muy buena calidad de sonido y soy capaz de grabar sonidos en alta calidad y realmente hacerlo todo en esta sala. Lancé mi propia marca de ginebra. Hemos estado trabajando en ello durante un año y finalmente lo hemos sacado. Y estoy super feliz de todo el feedback ahora mismo. Y personalmente, a mí también me gusta. Así que lo voy a poner en mi rider, espero que tengáis una para mí aquí chicos.
Después lancé también un pequeño EP. Nunca había sacado un EP antes, solo álbums, así que lancé este pequeño EP de seis temas. Y el feedback fue increíble. Tuve la oportunidad de hace directos en sitios donde nunca antes habría podido hacerlo si no hubiese sido por el confinamiento. Por ejemplo, pinché en el tejado del Palacio Real, creo que si no hubiera sido por el confinamiento, yo nunca, pero nunca, habría propuesto hacer algo así. Así que hay unas cuantas oportunidades que aprovechamos.
Y después, por supuesto, hay eventos como este donde es algo nuevo que estoy aprendiendo, ya sabes, es un nuevo… ¿Cómo puedo decirlo? ¿nuevo evento? Es algo nuevo que estoy probando este año. Solo han pasado cinco años desde que empecé a hacer tour. Y sigo descubriendo cosas nuevas como lo de el día de hoy. Por eso estoy tan agradecido de poder hacer estas cosas.
TML: Despite having been a difficult year for artists and promoters, we have seen a lot of new activity from you. What can you find positive from this 2020?
LF: Well, this year was not only bad, because there was a quite a few things that I did that I’m really happy about. So first of all, I finally launched the build of my studio. It’s been a dream of mine to to really build my studio, and it’s almost done. So I’m super stoked to be able, you know, to finally be able to produce until like 4, 5 o’clock in the morning and not disturbing the neighbours and having a really good sound quality and being able to record high quality sounds and really being able to do everything in this room. I launched my own gin. We’ve been working on it for a year and we finally launched it. And I’m super happy of all the feedback right now. And personally, I also really like it. So I’m going to put it on my rider, hopefully you guys have one for me here.
Then also I launched I released a little EP, I never released an EP before, only released albums, so I released a small EP with six tracks. And the feedback on that was amazing. I had the opportunity to do live streams on settings where I would never have been able to do it if it wasn’t for the lockdown. For example, I played on the roof of the Royal Palace, I think if it wasn’t for lockdown I never, ever would have proposed to do such a thing. So there are quite a few opportunities that we grabbed and and took advantage of.
And then of course, there’s events like this one where it’s a new thing that I’m learning, you know, it’s it’s a new, how can I say it new events? it’s something new that I am trying this year. It’s only been five years that I’m touring. And I’m still discovering new things like today. So I’m super blessed that I’m able to do such kind of things.
TML: Muchos artistas han aprovechado la cuarentena para exprimir al máximo su creatividad a la hora de producir. ¿Has sentido tú en algún momento esa abundante inspiración?
LF: Al principio del confinamiento, durante las primeras semanas, durante los primeros meses incluso. Pasaba todo mi tiempo en el estudio porque estaba muy inspirado. Porque, quiero decir, acababa de volver de años haciendo tour. Era la primera vez en mi vida que tenía tanto tiempo para de verdad ir al estudio y eso era la única cosa que se suponía que iba a hacer. Así que tenía tanto tiempo que estaba muy inspirado. Pero entonces después de algunas cosas lo que verdaderamente me inspiraba era ir a los eventos, escuchar a la gente pinchar música que quizá no escucharía e inspirarme por toda la música que me rodea.
Así que ahora en este confinamiento es más difícil inspirarse porque no voy a producir música para los shows porque no hay shows ahora mismo. Voy a producir música para, ya sabes, la gente de las radios. Realmente no sé a dónde quiero llegar. Pero estoy probando un montón de sonidos diferentes. Y cuando abro un proyecto, me lleva quizá un poco más de tiempo inspirarme y ponerme con ello. Pero una vez estoy en ello es como que se hace solo, en un día está hecho. Pero es, vamos a decir un poco más difícil, tener ganas de hacerlo, porque normalmente sé firmemente a dónde voy y ahora es quizá un poco más duro para mí. ¿Voy a por algo más chill, más relajado? Porque ahora, la música que estoy poniendo en mis live steams, es más o menos relajada, porque quiero que la gente pueda escucharla en casa y estar tranquila.
Pero a veces también quiero hacer música para la escena de los grandes festivales. Pero no la hay ahora. Así que simplemente la estoy haciendo y ahí está en el proyecto. Y lo cierro y ya veremos después.
TML: Many artists have taken advantage of the quarantine to make the most of their creativity when producing. Have you ever felt that abundant inspiration?
LF: So in the beginning of the lockdown in the first few weeks, the first few months even. I would spend all my time in the studio all the time because I was very inspired. Because I mean, I was just came back from five years or touring. It was the first time in my life I had so much time where I could actually go in the studio and it was the only thing I was supposed to do. So I had a lot of time I was very inspired. But then after some points what actually really inspired me is to go to events, listen to people play music that I maybe won’t listen to and I get inspired by all the music surrounding me.
So now this lockdown is kind of harder to be inspired because am not I going to produce music for the shows because there are no shows at the moment. Am I going to produce music for the, I don’t know, for the people for the radios. I don’t really know where I want to go. But I’m trying a lot of different sounds. And when I’m opening a project, it’s taking maybe a little bit more time to be inspired and get into it. But once I’m into it’s like track is done in, in a day, it’s done. But it’s, let’s say maybe a little bit hard to be in the mood like, because usually I really know where I’m going and now it’s maybe harder to me, am I going for something more chill more relaxed, because now, the music that I’m playing in my sets for the live streams, it’s kind of more relaxed, because I want people to be able to listen to it at home and being chill.
But then I also want sometimes to make music for the big festival scene. But there is no big festival scene. So I’m just making it and then it’s there in the project. And I just close it and we’ll see later.
TML: ¿Consideras que después de lo ocurrido la gente seguirá acudiendo a fiestas, festivales y otros eventos de la misma forma que sucedía antes de la pandemia, o crees que va a cambiar nuestro concepto de salir de fiesta?
LF: ¿Cómo se pondrá la gente al día con el 2020? Creo que depende de la gente, quizá algunos van a ponerse muy intensos con salir de fiesta, algunos van a salir de fiesta pero seguirán siendo muy precavidos y conscientes de lo que pasó el año pasado. Y luego por mi parte, creo que siempre voy a tener presente lo que pasó. Tendré más cuidado en algunos momentos cuando normalmente, ya sabes, hay 20 personas en una pequeña habitación del backstage, eso no va a volver a pasar. Por lo menos durante un tiempo, porque quizá tenemos que aprender de nuevo… en plan, ahora cuando te encuentras a alguien en un pasillo, esperas o te alejas, ni siquiera te lo planteas ya, simplemente lo haces. Así que llevará un tiempo para que vuelva a suceder, creo yo.
TML: Do you think that after what happened, people will continue to go to parties, festivals and other events in the same way as before the pandemic, or do you think our concept of partying will change?
LF: So how would people catch up on 2020? I think it depends on the people, maybe some people are going to go really intense into partying, some of them are going to go party, but still being very safe and, and aware of what happened last year. And then for my part, I think I will be always aware of what happened and bigger. I will be more careful about some moments when usually, you know, 20 people in a very small room backstage, that’s not going to happen anymore. For the next moments backstage, at least for for some time, because we need to maybe learn again, you know, like now when you cross somebody in a corridor, you wait or you go far away, you don’t even think about it anymore, you just do it. So it’s gonna take some time, I think to make it happen again.
TML: ¿Has descubierto recientemente algún artista emergente que quieras destacar a nuestros lectores?
LF: Sí, hay un par de chicos en mi sello que he fichado. Así que voy a promocionar a esos chicos porque firmé con ellos, ya que realmente creo en ellos. En primer lugar, está esta chica, Pretty Pink. Ha estado moviéndose por ahí, pinchó en mi escenario Lost Frequencies & Friends el año pasado, y es una DJ increíble. Pincha sets tan increíbles que puede empezar con dos personas y acabar con el escenario lleno porque su set va a unir a todo el mundo y tiene esta atmósfera fantástica. Y también sus temas que hemos estado firmando son muy melódicos pero techy aun así, música muy chula.
Luego tengo a alguien de Bélgica, Funky Fool, de nuevo de Bruselas. Tiene también muy buen gusto en la música y sus DJ sets también molan mucho. También tengo a Candela que es una gran y agresiva productora. Oscar House, que también es un increíble productor. Así que sí, tengo un montón de chicos llegando al sello pero también en cualquier parte del mundo. Hay un montón de productores así que… vosotros chicos deberías comprobar los vuestros.
TML: Have you recently discovered any emerging artist that you want to highlight to our readers?
LF: Yes, there’s a few guys on my label that I’ve signed. So I’m going to promote those guys because I signed them on because I really believe in them. First of all, there is this girl Pretty Pink. She’s been going around, she played on my stage Lost Frequencies & friends last year, and she is an amazing DJ. She plays an amazing set, really, really cool that she can start with two people and end with a full stage because her set is going to bring everybody together and have this amazing atmosphere. And also the tracks we’re signing from her are very melodic but still techy, very cool music.
Then I have somebody from Belgium, Funky Fool, again from Brussels. He has also a very good taste in music and also his DJ sets are really cool. Then I have Candela who is an aggressive great producer. Oscar House who is also an amazing producer. So yeah, we have a lot of guys coming up on the label but also everywhere in the world. There’s a lot of producers so… you guys should check out those guys.
