Este viernes queremos presentaros un EP y una entrevista muy especial. La artista costarricense Meli Rodríguez ha sacado a la venta cuatro nuevos trabajos, música underground con mucha intrahitoria de los que queremos hablaros hoy.
2018 ha sido un año cargado de estrenos para Meli Rodríguez en donde la hemos visto sacando seis nuevas referencias, siete contando con su nuevo EP que recibe el nombre de ‘Revolution‘ donde encontramos cuatro nuevos temas: ‘My Brain Is Music‘ y ‘Ubrique‘ en solitario y ‘Nuestro Siglo‘ y ‘Supernova‘ junto a Matcho (su pareja sentimental). Un EP en donde notamos ciertos toques del tech house que está predominando en América, un ejemplo es ‘Supernova‘ que nos trae a la mente los sonidos típicos de Dirtybird el sello de Claude Vonstroke al igual que en ‘My Brain Is Music‘.
Meli Rodríguez consigue en este EP afianzarse como una de las artistas referencia en latino america, en un mundo y en un país en el que la música electrónica aún tiene mucho recorrido que hacer. Hemos podido entrevistar a la artista, y nos ha hablado de esto, sus inicios, las principales diferencias entre la escena latinoamericana y la europea (vivió en España varios años) y mucho más. Dejamos que se presente ella misma, con todos vosotros: Meli Rodríguez.
– Hola Meli. En primer lugar muchas gracias por atender a nuestro medio en España, Wololo Sound. Vamos a comenzar dejando que te presentes un poco para el público español que no te conozca. ¿Quién es Meli Rodriguez y cuáles han sido tus pasos hasta aquí?
¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo! Soy Meli, cumplo 26 años el 13 de Octubre, nací y crecí en San Jose, Costa Rica hasta los 16 años. Tuve una gran infancia, siempre estuve metida en deportes, formé parte del gobierno estudiantil y siempre hacía fiestas con amigos y yo me encargaba de la música (cualquier cosa que no fuera académico jaja). A los 16 me fui para Austria de intercambio por seis meses donde aprendí a hablar alemán y también conocí un poco de la escena electrónica europea. Volví a Costa Rica por seis meses y luego me fui a vivir a Santiago, Chile con mis padres en el 2010. Fue una gran experiencia, Chile tiene una escena electrónica realmente grande con eventos y festivales todos los fines de semana. Con 17 años empecé un curso en DJ School Chile y a raíz de eso supe que era realmente lo que me gustaba. Al terminar el colegio me fui a Marbella, España por tres años, donde me gradué de diseño gráfico y también conocí a mi esposo y socio Matcho, que estaba estudiando producción musical. Ambos empezamos a hacer eventos pequeños en los bares del pueblo y cuando terminamos nuestros estudios decidimos ir a vivir a Costa Rica, empezamos nuestro sello Puchero Records y organizamos eventos mensuales en Club Vértigo (ya llevamos cuatro años y medio de residencia en el Club). Siempre me gustó la música y el tema de DJ pero jamás lo vi como un trabajo profesional hasta que conocí a Matcho y me di cuenta que nuestra pasión y amor por la música era todo lo que necesitábamos para dedicarnos a esto. Ha sido realmente duro, cansado y complicado pero hemos logrado sembrar las semillas que poco a poco están dando sus frutos.
Hi Meli, let’s start letting you introduce yourself to the Spanish people that don’t know you. Who is Meli Rodriguez and what were your steps to get here?
Hello! Thanks a lot for your time! I’m Meli, I turn 26 the 13th of October, I was born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica until i was 16 years old. I had a great childhood, I was always into sports, I took part in the student government and always organised parties with friends and I was in charge of the music, (anything that wasn’t academic haha). When I was 16 I moved to Austria in an exchange program for six months where I learnt to speak German and also got a bit into the European electronic scene. I came back to Costa Rica for six months and later moved to Santiago, Chile with my parents in 2010. It was a great experience, Chile has a really big electronic scene with events and festivals every weekend. When I was 17 I started to attend to the DJ School Chile and from there I discovered that it was what I really liked. When I finished school I moved to Marbella, Spain for three years, where I graduated in graphic design and also met my husband and partner Matcho who was studying musical production. We started to do small events in the town bars and when we finished our studies decided to move to Costa Rica, started our own label Puchero Records and organised monthly events in Club Vertigo (we had already been there as redients in the club for four years and a half). I always liked music and the DJ stuff but I never saw it as a professional job until I met Matcho and I realised that our passion and love for music was all we needed to work as it. It has been really tough, tiring and complicated but we succeeded at planting the seeds that are slowly giving the fruits.

– A lo largo de tu carrera has vivido en varios países, tanto latinoamericanos como europeos. ¿Es muy grande la diferencia a nivel cultural? ¿Escucha la misma música electrónica la gente a ambos lados del charco?
El shock cultural es gigante. Saliendo de Costa Rica, un país en desarrollo, en algunos lugares no hay nombres en las calles ni aceras, no hay metro ni buen sistema de transporte. Es un gran país en cuanto a naturaleza, tenemos las mejores montañas y playas del mundo y eso me encanta. Llegar a Europa o Sudamérica que son lugares muchísimo más desarrollados fue genial. Como una película para mi, andar en metro o en bus, caminar tranquila por la calle, cositas así. Pienso que sí se escucha la misma música en ambos lados del charco, por lo menos en Latinoamérica, en Estados Unidos a la música techno/tech house underground le ha costado integrarse ya que el dubstep es lo que más está de moda por esos lados. Igualmente hay muchos lugares y eventos en donde he ido a tocar y están construyendo una gran escena que estoy segura explotará en unos años. Estuve tocando en Chicago y Nueva York hace unas semanas… fue una grandísima experiencia. El público es un poco más callado y reservado pero igualmente disfrutan de la música y bailan hasta más no poder.
Along your career you’ve lived in many countries, both in Latin America and Europe. Is there a big difference between cultures? Do people listen to the same electronic music in both sides of the ocean?
The cultural shock is huge. Getting out of Costa Rica, a developing country, in some places there’s nameless streets without sidewalks, there’s no subway neither a good transport system. It’s a big country in terms of nature, we have the best countries and beaches in the world and I love that. Getting to Europe or South America which are way more developed places was awesome. Like a movie for me, take the subway or bus, walk quietly in the street, little things like those. I think that they do listen to the same music in both places Europe and Latin America, the USA had more difficulties to integrate Techno, Tech House and underground music since Dubstep it’s the trend around there. Even though there’s a lot of places and events where I’ve played that are building up a big scene that I’m sure that will blow up in few years. I’ve been playing in Chicago and New York these last weeks and it was a great experience. The people is a bit more quiet and shy but they still enjoy the music and dance till the end.
– Ahora vives en Costa Rica, ¿verdad? ¿Cómo es la escena musical en ese país?
Sí llevamos casi cinco años ya viviendo en las montañas de Costa Rica. La escena es pequeña pero pienso que poco a poco hemos ido educando a un publico muy joven y nuevo que nunca en su vida había escuchado este tipo de música hasta que llegaron a nuestros eventos. Como diseñadora decidí mercadear los eventos con muchos colores para que fuera atractivo a los jóvenes. (y funcionó)
Now you live in Costa Rica, right? How’s the musical scene in that country?
Yes, we’ve been nearly 5 years living in the mountains of Costa Rica. The scene is small but I think that we’ve been slowly teaching a very young and new crowd that never before listened to this kind of music until they came to our events. As a designer I decided to focus the events with a very colourful image to look more appealing to the youth (and it worked).
– ¿Has actuado alguna vez en España? ¿Te gustaría hacerlo a corto plazo? ¿Hay alguna sala o festival de nuestro país que te llame especialmente la atención?
¡¡España me encanta!! Toqué en Club Moss el año pasado y este verano toqué en ON Hotel Huelva, un lugar precioso en la playa. España tiene tantos festivales y clubes de alto nivel, para mi es un gran ejemplo a seguir. Me encantaría tocar algún día e inclusive realizar nuestros propios eventos en Razzmatazz, Barcelona, Club Kapital o Fabrik en Madrid. Festivales como Sónar para mi es de lo mas top por allí. Todos los años pasamos temporadas en España, viajando a diversos países europeos donde nos hemos estado dando a conocer en distintas escenas y clubs.
Did you ever play in Spain? Would you like to do it in a short term? Is there any club or festival in our country that specially caught your attention?
I love Spain!! I played in Club Moss last year and this summer in ON Hotel Huelva, a beautiful spot in the beach. Spain has so many high level festivals and clubs, for me is an example to look up to. I would love to play someday and even organise our own events in Razzmatazz, Barcelona, Club Kapital or Fabrik in Madrid. Festivals like Sonar are the best ones for me in there. Every year we spend some time in Spain, traveling around several European countries where we are building a name in several scenes and clubs.
– Tu estilo principal siempre ha bailado entre el tech-house y el techno. ¿Escuchas algún otro estilo, o te planteas salir de ahí? ¿Qué tal ves la escena actual en cuanto a música techno? ¡Cada vez se escucha más en nuestro país!
Claro que escucho todos los géneros de música habidos y por haber. Estudié percusión y fui baterista toda mi juventud, me encanta el reggae, hip hop, trap… de todo mientras suene bien! Hemos experimentado haciendo unos tracks de Hip Hop y rapeando cosas sin sentido que riman jaja. Siempre voy a experimentar y en mis presentaciones muchas veces toco remixes de tracks comerciales o viejos que le llegan al público. España tiene grandes productores de Techno que poco a poco se están dando a conocer. La escena Techno pienso sigue un poco pequeña pero poco a poco gracias al Tech House, la gente se está metiendo más a escuchar Techno.
Your main style has always moved between tech house and techno. Do you listen to other genres, or are you planning on moving furtherer than there? How do you see the actual Techno music scene? It’s rising in our country!
Of course I listen to all the musical genres that exist. I studied percussion and been a drummer all my youth, I love Reggae, Hip Hop, Trap… everything as long as it sounds good! We’ve experimented doing Hip Hop tracks and doing some nonsense rapping over it haha. I will always experiment and in my showcases I usually play remixes of commercial or old tracks that the crowd can rely on. Spain has big Techno producers that are slowly getting popular. The Techno scene I think it’s still a bit small but slowly thanks to the Tech House, people are listening to Techno more and more.
– Un hecho curioso de tu carrera musical es la cantidad de veces que compartes cabina con tu marido, Matcho, nacido en Andalucía. ¿Cómo es compartir vida artística con tu esposo?
Realmente es un sueño hecho realidad. No podría ser más genial compartir una pasión con tu otra mitad. Matcho es muy trabajador y me enseñado tantas cosas, somos un gran equipo y nos complementamos. Si yo me caigo el me levanta y si el se cae lo levanto yo.
An interesting fact about your career is the amount of times you go B2B with your husband, Matcho, born in Andalusia. How is it to share your artistic life with your husband?
It is really a dream came true. It could not be greater than sharing your passion with your other half. Matcho is very hard-working and he has tought me so much. We are a great team and we complement each other. If I fall, he cheers me up and if he falls I am the one who cheers him up.
– Junto a él has creado el sello Puchero Records. ¿Cómo nació esta idea, y en que punto estáis ahora con este proyecto?
Cuando llegamos a Costa Rica nadie nos quería contratar como DJs, todos tenían sus propios colectivos y eran muy cerrados, no nos dieron importancia así que decidimos crear nuestro propio colectivo y apoyar a todos aquellos que nadie más quiso apoyar. Empezamos una academia de DJ y Producción donde recibimos muchos estudiantes que ahora son de los mejores productores de Techno del país. Hoy en día podemos decir que organizamos las fiestas de techno mensuales más grandes de Centroamérica en Club Vértigo con una asistencia de unas 1600 personas y siguen creciendo cada vez más.
You have created Puchero Records alongside him. How did this idea come up and at what stage are you in this project right now?
When we arrived to Costa Rica nobody wanted to hire us as DJs, they all had their own collectives and they were very closed. They didn’t valued us so we decided to create our own collective and help all those others that nobody wanted to help. We started a DJ & Production academy where we received a lot of students that are now the best techno producers in our country. Nowadays, we can say that we organise the biggest monthly techno parties in Central America in Club Vértigo with an audience of around 1600 people, and it’s still growing more and more.
– Además ahora estás de estreno, gracias a un nuevo EP de cuatro canciones, dos en solitario y dos con tu compañero. ¿Qué nos puedes contar de estos cuatro trabajos?
Siento que la música va evolucionando con los años y ahora estamos en un punto donde simplemente podemos imaginarnos algo, llegar al ordenador y convertirlo en una canción. Jugar con las melodías, subidones y bajones para crear una reacción al público. El EP se llama ‘Revolution’ porque yo estoy completamente en contra del sistema y pienso que todos deberían de hacer lo que amen, entonces mi intención es inspirar a otros y mostrarles que todo es posible con trabajo y pasión.
Furthermore, you are now premiering a new four-track EP, two being solo tracks and the two other tracks alongside your husband. What can you tell us about this four projects?
I feel music keeps evolving throughout the years and right now we are on a point where we just imagine something, get to the computer and make it into a song. Playing with melodies, rises and comedowns to create a reaction on the audience. The EP is called ‘Revolution’ because I am totally against the system and I think everyone should do just what they love, so my intention is to inspire others and show them that everything is possible with hard work and passion.
– ¿Como te ves dentro de cinco años? ¿Qué proyectos tienes a medio-largo plazo?
Quiero llevar nuestras marcas Puchero Records, Baila Tu Cuerpo y Boca A Boca a otro nivel completamente. Crear shows, espectáculos, experiencias nuevas para el público. Seguir viajando, conociendo y compartiendo mis vibras con la mayoría de gente posible.
How do you see yourself in five years? What projects do you have in a mid/long-term?
I want to get out brands Puchero Records, Baila Tu Cuerpo and Boca A Boca to a complete next level. Create shows, news experiences for the audience. Keep on travelling, meeting new people and sharing my vibes with most of them.
– ¿Te has planteado en algún momento la producción de un álbum completo?
Claro que sí y de hecho estoy trabajándolo. Hace unas semanas falleció nuestra querida perra Lía debido a una picadura de serpiente, ella era nuestra hija, nuestra bebé y estuvo ahí desde que empezamos con la música. Mi álbum se llamará “The power of the Wolf” que significa “El poder de la Loba”. Será un álbum de solo Techno con kicks bien marcados, melodías groovy y vocales pegadizas… será mi mejor trabajo aún.
Have you ever thought about working on the production of a full album?
Of course, and I’m actually working on it. Some weeks ago our lovely dog Lía passed away due to a snake bite, she was our daughter, out baby, and she was there with us since the beginning. My album will be called ‘The Power of The Wolf’, which means ‘El poder de la Loba’ in Spanish. It would be an only techno album with really enphasized kicks, groovy melodies and catchy vocals.
