Parece mentira que, en nuestros once años de vida, el que es considerado como uno de los maestros del sonido melódico nunca se hubiera pasado por nuestra casa. Pero al final todo llega. Es por eso que en el día de hoy Rune Reilly Kölsch nos concede un poco de su tiempo para hablar del futuro lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum ‘KINEMA’, así como su gira ‘Kölsch and the Machine’, donde realizará un nuevo concepto centrado en el formato live, reviviendo los éxitos de su laureada carrera de una forma nunca vista antes, y que llegará a Madrid el próximo 12 de diciembre en LAB theClub.
‘Kölsch and the Machine’: el nuevo live show del productor danés que llega junto a su álbum ‘KINEMA’
Wololo Sound: Muy buenas Rune, es un placer tenerte por primera vez en Wololo Sound. ¿Qué tal te encuentras en esta frenética temporada veraniega?
Kölsch: Intentando llevarlo lo mejor posible. Ha sido frenético, pero divertido hasta el momento.
Wololo Sound: Hi Rune, it’s a pleasure to have you on Wololo Sound for the very first time. How are you doing in this hectic summer season?
Kölsch: Just trying to stay afloat. It has been hectic, but fun so far.
WS: Como curiosidad, naciste en Christiania, el famoso barrio autogobernado de Copenhague con cultura hippie. ¿Ha influido esto en algo de tu faceta musical o en la manera de afrontar la vida de artista y la tour life?
K: Ha tenido una profunda influencia en mi música. Nunca me sentí realmente parte de la cultura «danesa» como tal. Al ser mi madre alemana y mi padre irlandés, y yo nacido en Christiania, sentía que era de un lugar al que no pertenecía. Una sociedad de ensueño muy extraña. Las grandes diferencias culturales en mi familia me influyeron mucho a lo largo de los años, pero he conseguido llegar a amar Christiania. La visito a menudo y finalmente la siento como mi ciudad natal.
WS: As a curiosity, you were born in Christiania, the famous self-governed, hippie district of Copenhagen. Has that had any influence on your musical side or on the way you approach life as an artist and the tour life?
K: It has had a profound influence on my music. I never really felt part of “Danish” culture as such. My mom being German and my Father Irish and born in Christiania, it felt like I was from a place that never was. A weird dream society. The big cultural differences in my family did influence me a lot over the years, and I’ve come to love Christiania. I visit often and it finally feels like my hometown.
WS: Para nosotros es un orgullo que nos atienda una eminencia del sonido techno melódico a nivel mundial. Temas como ‘Grey’ o ‘All That Matters’ han marcado a una generación, al igual que tu sello KOMPAKT se ha convertido en uno de los mejores escaparates de música electrónica. ¿Es consciente el Rune del día a día, de lo que significa Kölsch para esta industria?
K: Muchas gracias, te lo agradezco mucho. Solo para aclarar algo, Kompakt no es mi sello discográfico. Es propiedad y está dirigido por tres leyendas de la industria por derecho propio: Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt y Reinhart Voigt. Me han influido profundamente a lo largo de los años y siempre ha sido un honor formar parte de la familia Kompakt.
Mi propio sello es IPSO, y funciona de forma muy similar a un colectivo artístico. De vez en cuando, me uno a mis amigos para crear algo especial. Además, mi nuevo álbum ‘KINEMA’ se publicará en IPSO.
Rune no es consciente de lo que Kölsch representa para esta industria, y creo que es mejor así. Como artista, creo que es importante mantenerte curioso y humilde. Si aceptara ser un artista legendario, o el honor que eso conlleva, quizá me relajaría mucho. Podría ser demasiado para mí, por lo que sigo esforzándome.
WS: It’s a real honor for us to speak with such a leading figure in melodic techno on a global scale. Tracks like ‘Grey’ or ‘All That Matters’ have marked a generation, just as your label, KOMPAKT, has become one of the finest showcases for electronic music. Is the day-to-day Rune aware of what Kölsch represents for this industry?
K: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Just to clarify. Kompakt is not my label. It is owned and run by 3 Industry legends in their own right. Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt and Reinhart Voigt. They have influenced me profoundly over the years, and it has always been an honour to be part of the Kompakt family.
My own label is IPSO, and that is run very much like an art collective. I will join forces with friends to create something special from time to time. Also my new album KINEMA will be released on IPSO.
Rune is not aware of what Kölsch represents to this industry, and I think it’s good that way. As an artist, I believe it’s important to stay curious and humble. If I embrace being a legacy act, or the honour attached to that, I might relax too much. It might be too much to carry for me, so I keep on pushing.
WS: Hablemos de tu próximo álbum KINEMA. Este disco simboliza tu evolución como artista y da un repaso a toda tu carrera, revisionándola y dándole un nuevo enfoque. Para los que sean grandes fans de tu música, ¿va a ser un golpe de nostalgia?
K: KINEMA abarca tanto mi historia como mi visión de futuro. Empecé a componer más canciones después de mi último álbum, ya que por fin me atreví a profundizar en la estructura. Me inspira mucho la música folk, el indie, pero también cosas como la ópera. Han sido la principal inspiración para KINEMA.
También intenté retomar algunos de mis trabajos anteriores. Quería ver si podía samplear algunas de mis piezas antiguas y crear algo nuevo a partir de ellas. Ha sido un enfoque muy descarado hacia la música en general. Un amigo me dijo que nunca me contuviera, así que esta vez me lancé de lleno con las voces y la estructura de las canciones.
WS: Let’s talk about your upcoming album, KINEMA. This record symbolizes your evolution as an artist and reflects on your entire career, revisiting it and offering a new perspective. For your longtime fans, would you say this album will feel like a wave of nostalgia?
K: KINEMA embraces both my history and looking towards the future. I’ve started writing more songs after my last album, as I finally dared to think about song structure. I’m very inspired by folk music, indie, but also things like opera. They have been the main inspiration for KINEMA.
Also, I tried to re-embrace some of my older work. I wanted to see if I could sample some of my previous pieces and create something new out of them. It’s been a very unapologetic approach to music in general. A friend told me to never hold back, so this time I went full on with vocals and song structure.
WS: Al consistir KINEMA en dar ese toque moderno a la música que ha marcado tu vida. ¿Podríamos considerar este álbum como un auto homenaje a lo que te ha llevado hasta este punto de tu carrera?
K: No lo considero un homenaje. Es un esfuerzo continuo por desafiarme a mí mismo y encontrar nuevas formas de expresarme. De ahí el nombre KINEMA, que significa capturar, avanzar y evolucionar.
WS: Since KINEMA gives a modern twist to the music that has shaped your life, could this album be considered sort of self-tribute to everything that has brought you to this point in your journey?
K: I don’t consider it a self tribute. It is a continuous effort to challenge myself, and come up with new ways to express myself. Hence the name KINEMA, which means capturing, moving forward and evolving.
WS: Este álbum va muy vinculado con tu nuevo show ‘Kölsch and the Machine’, en el cual has afirmado que será muy inmersivo y que estarás dentro de la máquina, haciendo que las líneas entre el artista y la tecnología se disuelvan. ¿Cómo pretendes conseguir esto y cómo surgió esta idea?
K: Actualmente estoy desarrollando el espectáculo, que incorporará una gran configuración de sintetizadores modulares de mi estudio que me rodearán en el escenario. Esto significa que podré improvisar y crear nuevas versiones de mi música sobre la marcha. Es un gran reto conseguir que todo funcione a la perfección, pero finalmente he encontrado la manera de mantener la libertad para improvisar sin perder los elementos de la canción original.
WS: This album is closely connected to your new show, Kölsch and the Machine, which you’ve described as very immersive, where you’ll be inside the machine and the lines between artist and technology will blur. How do you intend to achieve that, and how did the idea come to life?
K: I’m currently developing the show, and it will incorporate a big modular synth setup from my studio, surrounding me on stage. This means I can improvise and create new versions of my music on the spot. It’s a very big challenge to make it all work together, but I finally found a way to stay free to improvise, without losing the elements of the original song.
WS: Sabemos que, para este espectacular show, vas a sacar directamente algún que otro instrumento de tu estudio personal. ¿Cuál es el instrumento o la pieza que más valores de tu estudio?
K: Me gustan los sintetizadores modulares, y eso se nota mucho en el espectáculo Kölsch and the Machine. Ahora mismo estoy reuniendo todos los sintetizadores que quiero llevar, y la verdad es que se está volviendo un poco abrumador. No quiero limitarme demasiado, así que sin duda es todo un reto. Actualmente, mi módulo favorito es el Black Corporation Deckards Voice, specialmente con un gran reverberador.
WS: We know that for this spectacular show, you’ll be using some instruments directly from your personal studio. Which is the instrument or piece of gear you value the most?
K: I am into modular synths, and that part is very obvious in the Kölsch and the Machine show. I’m currently gathering all the synths I want to bring, and it is really becoming a little overwhelming. I don’t want to limit myself too much, so it’s a challenge for sure. Currently, my favourite module is Black Corporation Deckards Voice, especially with a large reverb on it.
WS: ¿Qué puede esperar de diferente una persona que te haya visto en directo y te vaya a ver con este nuevo espectáculo de Kölsch and the Machine?
K: Durante los últimos 10 años, me he dedicado principalmente a pinchar, así que esta es una experiencia muy diferente. Solo es mi música, interpretada por mí y mis máquinas. Voy a bucear en todos mis álbumes a lo largo de los años. Quiero hacer una mezcla de clásicos, joyas desconocidas y material totalmente nuevo.
WS: What someone who’s already seen you live can expect to be different in this new Kölsch and the Machine experience?
K: For the last 10 years, I’ve primarily been doing dj sets, so this is a very different experience. It’s only my music, performed by me and my machines. I will dive into all my albums over the years. I’m looking to have a blend of classics, unknown gems and totally new material.
WS: ¿Y qué esperas tú del show que tienes en Madrid el 12 de diciembre presentando este nuevo show? ¿Por qué España y concretamente Madrid?
K: Madrid es una ciudad increíble. Siempre me ha encantado actuar en Madrid y estoy deseando volver con el nuevo espectáculo en LAB theClub. Lo único que espero es que la gente mantenga una mente abierta y esté preparada para algo un poco diferente de lo que suelo hacer.

WS: And what do you expect from your show in Madrid on December 12, where you’ll be presenting this new concept? Why Spain, and more specifically, why Madrid?
K: Madrid is such an amazing city. I always loved performing in Madrid, and cannot wait to come back with the new show at LAB theClub. The only thing I expect is for people to stay open minded and ready for something a bit different from me.
